Is the engine malfunction light meant to come on , when the ignition is turned on ?

If there was a fault , would it show on the display screen ?

I think all the lights come on for a few seconds when the ignition is turned on dont they? Then should go out after a couple of seconds? If the light stays on you have a problem. You can buy a cheap code reader from ebay or amazon which you can get the codes from yourself, you can plug it in below the sterring wheel under the dash to the right. I got one about 14 quid. I have a code P1000 which i`m still trying to figure out.

P1000 is nothing to worry about its a maintenance code and will not make the eml come on nor will p1111

p1000 will bring the light on its the only code that is on mine and my light is on

P1000 is a very common Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) and can be indicated after maintenance has been carried out. This is not necesarily an indication of a problem, The service engineer may have cleared fault codes, after repair or rectification of a problem. If they have, code P1000 will be present, it can not be cleared by normal means, the ECU will clear the code when all engine test cycles have been completed.

Jaguar Fault code P1000 will NOT illuminate the Jaguar Check Engine

Light (MIL light), however it will be indicated on a DTC Reader.

If your MIL light comes back on again after having a fault repaired it is a very good indication that the original fault remains or that a new fault has shown up. Read the DTC fault code to determine the cause of the new fault.

If the Diagnosis test Code P1000 remains flagged on the DTC Reader, after DTCs have been cleared, but the MIL indicator is not indicating a problem it is likely that engine management OBD diagnostic monitor drive cycles HAVE NOT BEEN COMPLETED.

Every time you start the car and go through a complete drive cycle (10,000 revolutions of the motor and the motor up to temp), it is logged. after 5 complete drive cycles, the next starting of the engine, the check engine light will go out. If a further problem is sensed by the computer, the process will repeat.

and after several trips out in the car most over 50 miles the light stays on and still only p1000 ???? any ideas?

I have a code p1000 showing on my reader & the engine management DOES come on. Every time I clear the fault the light

goes out but when I drive the car ten feet it comes back on. My car is well maintained & serviced regularly and it is really

irritating to see the fault light when my car is running as it should. The only reason I can think of that may have caused

the fault is I gave my sons jag a jump start a couple of days ago & I haven,t started the car since then.

Would this have caused the fault & if so how do I clear it???

I think that the EML is indicating that it is something to do with the battery.

I wonder if the jump start took too much out of the battery?  Maybe a spell on a battery charger for an hour would so the trick?

you may have faulty lambda sensors which shows the engine management light, best to check all cylinders?   then along with new plugs. keep us all posted on how you resolve this,   dave

Yep definitely the lambda sensor,I bought a code reader & hooked it up & sure enough P1000 was the reading so

checked the code to find you were right mate. I also got a reading of 1467 which showed a sensor located under

the air filter but my mechanic said both readings were connected to the lambda. He also told me to clear the faults

on my reader & said once cleared leave the engine turning over for half an hour which would give the ecu a chance

to update but even if the light comes back on not to worry as it won,t affect the car in any way. 

I like to keep things pristine on my jag so I,ve asked the mechanic to change the plugs & put a new lambda

sensor onto it.

 

nice one ...yes its best to replace all lambda sensors due to the cars age plus new plugs too. glad its sorted.
