problems problems!

Hi All,

looking for a bit of advice on here. my 2010 3.0 V6 luxury XF has just ran out of warranty on the 9th March. since December last year it has had two new sets of rear discs and 1 set of front discs replaced under the warranty as they were warped. I 'm sad to say that I have severe juddering again under braking even though I had asked Stratstone Jaguar to check out the braking system fully whilst in for it's 3 year service a few weeks before the warranty ran out.

the car has only got 29400 miles on it! I'm starting to lose the faith in the quality of the vehicle as to top it off it also drops into "restricted performance" mode randomly which resets itself after the car has been parked up for a few minutes and then will be fine for a few days then it kicks in again.

has anyone else had these issues and what course of action do you recommend?

Hi

Sorry to hear of your warped disk problem.

The warping is caused by over heating of the disk. Do you brake at high speeds a lot? Live on a large hill?

Have you had the calipers overhauled to check the slide pins are not corroded?

When the car goes in to limp mode it should set a fault code, i would go and get the fault code read from the memory and see whats causing that, maybe ABS due to the faulty calipers?

Keep us updated

Hi Steve,

I do a bit of motorway driving but I do not speed excessively. I also do a lot of mixed driving and never had any brake issues with the car I had previously which had done nearly 100k miles!

I'm now expecting a big bill to sort these issues which is leaving me very disallusioned.

if the pads touch the disks then they can get really hot, so when doing motorway driving they will be hot.

go and take a motorway run and then stop and put your hands near the wheel hub (not on the disks) and if they glow warm then they are probably touching slightly. Or it could have done that a while back

They cannot warp without the heat so I would think its all down to the calipers or pads

Don't feel too disallusioned by this.. i had quite a few Lexus before and they also had the same problems which was all down to the caliper.

The rears were changed in December and also March. The fronts were done in February. to be honest I questioned the brakes binding and requested that they do a comprehensive check of the braking system whilst it was in for its 3 year service. I was told they couldnt find anything wrong despite them replacing the rear discs again!

I do believe that the brakes are binding to the point I no longer use the handbrake as I thought that was causing the rears binding.

when stopped I just put it in park.

It's booked in with Stratstone as a warranty issue to look at the braking system again and they'll diagnose the Limp home mode issue and advise.

I'll keep anyone who is interested posted on the 15th...

  • 2 weeks later...

Well here goes. car went into Stratstone on Monday. apparently there is nothing wrong with the discs but the wheels were out of balance!! i just had tracking and fronts balanced 2 weeks ago and it cured a bit of the issue but I still am not happy when braking from 70mph it still judders but not as much as previous. I still feel a bumpy ride when cruising along but I guess Stratstone Jaguar just expect me to put up with it as it's not as bad as it was  . not the attitude I expect from the main dealer. I'm left with a bitter taste in my mouth still as I think the car should "waft" along effortlessly which it did when I first test drove it last year in August.

I really hope it improves when I switch from the crappy Budget Accelera tyres they fitted which I don't think are helping the situation but thats another story with good old Stratstone

fobbed off and fed up

The budget tyres wont help, not what i would expect from Jaguar.I am no expert but have been driving for forty years and in my opinion your car should not judder when braking your disc/pad set up must be wrong ie. warped discs. As a prestige brand customer you deserve better.Hope you get it all sorted.

Hi Neil,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Never experienced brake judder with my XF-S, though the bumpy ride is a rather well-known XF 'feature'. As you'll see from my posts elsewhere on this forum, I solved this ride problem by getting Spires to fit their 'Comfort' suspension to my car. No adverse effect on the excellent handling, but the ride is now as I think it should have been in the first place.

As other members have noted, tyres can be critical. What wheel size are you running? - I believe that anything larger than 18 inch is likely to transmit excessive shock and vibration into the car.

Best wishes,

Martin
