I have a 2005 X-Type 2.0d (Sport Premium) with 96k on the clock. I have noticed that it belches black smoke on accelerating quite hard but this goes after a few minutes driving. I also have a slight, I hesitate to use the word "misfire", hesitation in power when cruising, no loss of acceleration. Still pulls nicely.

I am planning to use some AR6400-D additive. I have been sceptical about additives all my life and have avoided them but this does "claim" to help solve the very problems I am experiencing.

I will post my results, assuming the engine does not blow up in which case I will be sitting in a corner crying.

In the meantime has anyone else used this AR6400-D additive or have similar problems?

  • 2 weeks later...

How did you get on with the additive?

Another possible cause for excessive smoking is that the diesel injectors tend to drift out of calibration from original specs.

This can easily be checked and recoded using a scan tool.

 Hi Trevor,

Thanks for the advice. I have not used the additive AR6400-D yet, I have decided to have the TerraClean treatment instead, tomorrow actually. I will post my thoughts in a few day's.

I have used the AR6400-D on my S-type and it worked a treat. I kept getting engine light until i started using the additive.

Since i stopped using it after 2 tanks i have had a light on but goes away after 5 starts

I think another EGR valve me thinks.

With your black smoke would it be DPF regeneration?

Good to know the AR6400-D works. I'm not getting too stressed about it until after tomorrow when it gets the Terraclean treatment. If I still have the problem I will start nosing around at other things.

if you have the terraclean done and it still smokes then additives may be pointless. I am pretty sure the DPF regeneration kicks out some black smoke.

OK, thanks for that Steve.

Hiya John, I'm having the same problem with my 2.0d x type, I've been told to strip out the ERG valve and give it a good clean as these can get blocked with carbon, going to give it a go shortly

Hi Philip, do you mean an EGR Valve? I had the Terraclean process done a few days ago and it's much better. Good luck.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago it got so bad I had to pull-up at the roadside ..I got a breakdown truck to get me home the take the car to their garage ... We talked about possibly EGR valve or worst scenario the turbo ... I got a phone call next day from the garage to say car was ready for collection ...the problem was a loose pipe on turbo cost for job was for2 jubilee clips £40 plus £60 for a 30 mile tow in the car now is running like new .

Hi every one

New to this site! I am an X Vauxhall mechanic and have got a 55 plate X Type 2.0L diesel. I have had a problem with it smoking and engine knocking. No loss of power, No EML. Very bad MPG! Took EGR valve off and gave it a good old clean, Checked the Vac unit and that the valve was moving free and not sticking. All good. Re fitted unit but still the same! looked at MAF sensor and checked wiring all ok! Checked Turbo pipes. All ok. Took vac controll valve off that controlls the EGR valve and that was ok. Starting to scratch my head now! Had a look at the Vac pipes that go to the controll valve 3 in total! and found that the vent pipe from the controll unit to the intake pipe just befor the MAF sensor had come off. If you remove the cover for the top of the battery you can see where it fits on. So put the pipe back on went out for a test drive and all sorted. It was that simple. So check your pipes is my tip of the day!!!

I have the same problem with my 2009 plate jaguar, I have replaced the EGR valve but it is still the same, any other ideas

Hi Dave, and welcome to the club.

I had my 2.7D s type put through the terra clean service and it has made a world of a difference.  It is worth the £120 or so cost, asit has given me a better fuel consumption [53 mpg on one trip of 90 miles] and a much smoother engine.  Also I do not use supermarket diesel, and I find that the occasional fill up of the expensive stuff gives the engine a treat.  After all, it is a jaguar!

I hope that you enjoy the club.

Regards,

Peter.

Situation got worse after a long road trip to France. Had the EGR valve cleaned (extremely dirty, apparently only 40% opening one end), replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator valve. Situation much improved but it still needs two new injectors. Had Terraclean last year and helped enormously.

Thanks Peter

after further investigation I have found a split in the EGR cooler pipe, for the time being I have wrapped it in duct tape and it seems a lot better will have to wait until Monday to get a new pipe, hope they are fairly easy to fit.

Dave

I had exactly the same issues with the sooty smoke during acceleration when I bought my X-Type.

Upon recommendation of my mechanic who knows these engines back to front, I fitted one of these EGR Valve resistor plates.....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EGR-valve-restricter-plate-Jaguar-X-type-Ford-Mondeo-Transit-2-0-2-2-2-4TDCi-S-S-/110906768445?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19d28efc3d

Best £4 I have spent. Now there is barely any sooty smoke, there is no loss of performance, and no engine management light on the dash either. At less than four quid it's got to be worth a try.

Hi all,

i have a Jag X-Type Diesel 2004, 85K. I See black smoke when i accelerate in 2nd & 3rd gear.
1 - cleaned the EGR valve
2 - changed the air filter (used a performance filter)
3 - there was split in the hose pipe from intercooler to the EGR - replaced that too.
However, I still see black smoke - not sure what do to ?

Please can some help, it will be really appreciated.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your reply. I have contacted few Terra clean services offered around Chester.

One of them advised me that the black smoke on acceleration can be because of faulty injectors (burring more fuel and not controlling the flow from the fuel pump).

This was a common problem with Jags up until 2004 reg.

I think i might try Teraclean first and see how it reacts to it.

Best regards

Abbas

Personally, I'd spend £4 on the EGR restrictor plate first. See if it makes a difference before spending bigger money.

Thank you Chris - much appreciated.

Please can I check if you got any engine management light (or warnings) switched on after the EGR restrictor plate was installed ?

Thank you

Abbas

The EML has not come on since it was fitted.

My '05 X-Type had suffered all the problems identified here; black smoke on acceleration, slight misfire getting worse, reduced fuel economy.

The problems are all gone now - I have had the following work done;

1. Clean the EGR valve - reduced to about 40% opening at one end

2. New fuel pressure regulator valve fitted

3. Fitted 2 new diesel injectors

4. Fitted new Turbo Boost hose

Drives as sweet as the day she was born - almost!

Happy John

Hi All,

The car had a full service and fitted EGR restrictor plate - I must say it has helped 50% ! Thank you Chris for this great idea!!

The next one will be Terra Clean in January - fingers crossed.

Since the car had full service, I note it produces a puff of white smoke in the morning (when i first start the engine) only for 5 seconds and has bad smell too. but Its back to normal with in seconds - Hope this is not worrying ?

I also hear whirring sound from the engine / Steering when its cold - only happens when I turn the steering left / right ( 1st / 2nd gear and when its cold). is this something worrying or is it just the steering pump needs replacing ?

apart from the above its FAB no major issues.

Thanks
