jack the car up and make safe ! remove wheel, remove ABS sensor, rearhub/bearings are a sealed unit with x4 nuts/studs to undo. remove disc and hang up the caliper if needed. the hub/bearings will be a very tight fit so caution when trying to remove so no damage is done. then when removed insert a lever between the inner drive shaft joint and the drive casing, with a thin piece of wood against the casing. prise gentle until free from the differential, but if it proves to be a bit reluctant to move strike it with the palm of your hand. make sure that driveshaft Oil seal is in the differential and not damaged. you may get a bit of Oil spillage but not much? that is when you withdraw the shaft from the unit. fitting is the reversal noting....... new circlips to inner ends of driveshafts, all fasteners tighten to specified torque, then replenish drive fluid. ( torque settings) :- driveshaft/hub nut = 270nm universal joint bolts=44nm

the only help i can offer is start the car and set the air con to its coldest setting, then turn on the air con and you should here the compressor engage the clutch which makes audible click, then feel the inlet and outlet pipes at the compressor. one side should be cold and the other hot. if theres no difference in the pipes then its your compressor!

for me john i would view the car you drive with a fine tooth comb, then i would do the same with the other, then its which is the best out of the two? (you decide) or do other up and drive it for a bit and keep the one you like best, then sell the other...

a daul mass flywheel is on a manual and will thump on tick over, as it gets worse the noise gets louder, but then rev the car a bit and its not to bad? but you then have the thrust release bearing which can also squeal and also rattle /thump.. now a auto box has a torque converter which is different. not sure what they do as i have never owned an auto.

when brakes binding it could be either brakes caliper seized, or handbrake mechanism playing up, but i suspect its the master cylinder, if so it will have to be replaced.

dave not sure if you know but if you type in "jaguar heritage parts" on the internet it puts you on a web site that may help, also there is a heritage business centre at browns lane in coventry, who have a team of guys with loads of knowledge if ever needed.

i own a 2.0d on a 54 plate, if you do consider on a x type diesel make sure there is no rattle from the daul mass flywheel,( makes a loud thumping noise)but with 50k on the clock it should be fine! also on the test drive press every button going and see if they work ? thuds, rattles, squeaks, a possible case of bushes? then service history, + stamps. no steering wobble, no brake judder when pressing brake pedal !, if a noise comes from the left side of the engine when running it my be the crankshaft wheel damper or pulley tensioner, make sure all door rubbers are in good condition with no cuts includes rear boot, check all sills as the x type does suffer with this problem of rust so be warned to check on this. best return of miles per gallon on mine is 49mpg. also the drivers seat wears bad in the bottom corner with wear and tear. test drive the car until up to running temp then check air works to cold air ? heater also hot/cold. check what tyre wear is left on all tyres check in boot for spare and wheel change kit. feel if car pulls hard to any side. (tracking) just a few things there for you......good luck on the car.

hi dave...i read the practical classic car magazine and i think that there is a company that does the old style radios, if you try a news agents or big shopping stores and first have a flick through and see if you can see there add.? sorry not brought one for a while and all my others are at work for the lads to read. in regards to restoration my friend had a mk1 and the seams were lead lined in the boot which snapped the spring, i just could not believe the weight of the boot lid! looking at your pics everything looks like its starting to come together. cheers dave...

plastic clips arrived yesterday for the inner panels, but ive had to drill out four holes 1mm dia, bigger to get the clips to push in. now waiting for me chimney clips to do around bottom front arch where all plastic panels meet, had to re-mold a plastic panel bracket as it snapped off.

the reverse switch is mounted on the gearchange bracket located on the top of the transmission casing. you may have to remove the air cleaner to get to it.

me peter it would be a trip to the breakers/scrap yard to find a decent cheap one or phone around first, or even eBay. but me i would have to take it to bits to see if i could repair it first.

wow what a project! what will your input be when doing the car yourself? or is it one where its sent off to other companys to do the work for you. or will you replace the parts yourself when parts come back after restoration. when doing it yourself you know ever nut and bolt, and what went where and how it fits, best of all is that when you look back at pics or vids is that sense of ive built that along with a driving experience that puts a great smile on your face. best of luck with the build, please update with progress pics,

ok guys .... bit of a video done and very shaky but should be able to see whats going on. now in the video you should see a sponge that is half way up with a silver round patch. when i removed this loads of water came out and it smelt stagnant along with dirt too. also the silver disc had slipped down witch should have covered a hole. anyway all sorted out and also ive got pics. enjoy dave.
