so last night my drivers side headlight started playing up.. I replaced the dipped beam for a pair of osram night breakers.. when I went to leave work last night the drivers side was dim and the indicator was also lit up. im going to check the earth point behind the headlight but could there be anything else to check? im guessing it could be a loose connection as 20 mins in to my drive home it flicked back to normal

I had the same problem last night, except it was the dipped offside that went out. I gave the headlight a 'thump'  and the light came back to full illumination again.

Checked all connections this morning and couldn't see anything loose.

turns out it was the earth , gave the earth connection a wiggle n the headlight Bulb flicekered. so late night bodge and it works again

Very frequently light problems involve earthing.  I used to have a Rover Sterling whose rear light cluster sometimes failed.  A firm thump used to cure it.

I had a rear light failure on my s-type, but the message centre told me about it before I spotted it.

Possibly useful for someone? If it looks to be an earth fault on the rear it could well be a fuse, from memory either 54 or 57 in the boot, brake light fuse. If it has blown it will appear to be an earth fault, reduced output when brake pedal depressed. The reverse and fog lamp will be brightly lit just to con'fuse' you!
