'S' Type Jaguar Problem

Recently bought another 'S' type. 2000 model. High motorway miles but the price I paid for it was peanuts. Due to this it has problems. The strangest one is the trip computer. The display is often blank. Then when it wants to it comes on and works normally. But once you stop the car and turn off ignition it goes blank again until it decides to work again. I have tried disconnecting battery and reconnecting which has worked on previous vehicles. But not this one!

There is a fault on the gearbox (usual 0795) which of course is a solenoid or could be a valve spring which again is a common fault. So I have another car with great engine and box but not so good body. However even this one is odd. Start the car and it will play up with gear changing. Turn off the ignition and restart and it will not play up for the rest of the day.

The third problem is a speed sensor in the back brakes which means the traction light is on along with the abs.

Now I am wondering if all faults could be connected to some faulty or loose wire? The weird thing is I bought it with a recent mot. On checking I was informed that it past the mot with no issues! Is someone telling Porkies or been slipped a few quid to do the mot?

Lastly is the colour. It has Orange on the reg doc. The Vin numbers match (the one on the dashboard. However the car is in fact Gold coloured and I can find no evidence of the car ever being Orange!

Hi Dave,

If you haven't check yet, a lot of members keep mentioning battery condition, it could be worth checking out as if it's not charging properly this can cause intermitant electrical problems. Hope this may help, if not try old Peter he's always offer some great advise

Regards,

Andrew

HI Dave,

Kind words from Andrew, and he is quite right about the battery.  The s type has quite a lot of  electrical equipment, and when the battery is getting old or needs charging the less important electrical bits stop working properly.  I had a problem with the heated rear window when I first got my car and found out that the car had been standing inside a garage for 3 months and had only just been charged.

If the battery is the wrong size, and I have come across that, it needs changing and if it is over 5 years or so old, check it out.

Bad connections/earthing are always worth checking.

On the colour try getting a check on the specification as when it left the factory.  Ask a Jaguar dealer if they will give you a read out using your VIN number, or try Vindecoderz which sometimes works. [it did for me.]

I have never seen an Orange Jaguar, though!

Regards,

Peter.

Hi. The Battery is a proper Jaguar one and I did a multimeter test which shows it is charging correctly. The Window where the mileage and faults etc are normally displayed has stopped working completely and only functions intermittently. (When it feels like it.) The rear brake on passenger side has started 'chugging' as you brake and the red brake light in dash comes on soon after starting. I am thinking of buying my old one  back. Has a crap body but excellent engine. This one however is starting to be a considerable pain lol.

Thanks for advice and replies.
