gear change speed

Can anyone on here furnish me with the up change speeds of the 6 speed auto gearbox, on cold it wont change into top until 75mph when the car has been for a run this alters to 50 ish, could this also be the reason for the restricted performance message if  kick down is attempted, which after a stop dissapears, does anybody have any ideas, could it be sticking solanoid, transmission fluid requires changing or is this the normal working of this particular gearbox, I have never had this problem with the XJ. I value the input of all members of the forum. Regards All

Hi Ian,

Is you car the diesel engined version?  If so, the Owners manual does suggest a gentle accelerator while the engine is cold.  I recall the days before the automatic choke, which also limited you speed somewhat till it was pushed in.

Modern cars still have a choke, and I think that is the reason why you shouldn't kick down while the engine is a bit cold.  I am luck, in one way, as I live in an urban area with a 30 mph area for about three miles in all directions.

Regards,

Peter.

Wouldn't know where to look for it, it's the "a valve" I drive Them I don't repair them, those days are long gone. However if it's just a matter of a spray can I could manage that. Just have to make sure I don't tell her indoors that I tried to fix something, it could open the floodgates to household repairs, doesn't bear thinking about. REGARDS Ian

Hi Ian,

The EGR valves of the s type are positioned either side of the "V" on the V6 Engine.  They look very tricky to get them off to clean.

Luckily the EGR cleaner comes in a spray.

First the engine should be at normal operating temperature. Then you remove the air filter --  easy job.

Then you have to get someone to keep the engine running at about 1200  rpm.  You can put a brick on the accelerator pedal instead.

Then spray the from the can into the air intake.  The engine will start to race a bit which shows that the spray is working.  Keep the spray going in quickish bursts till the can is empty.

Then put the air filter back and take the car for a run - about 15 minutes will do.

Job Done,

Peter.

Hello all

When cold, I ease off the throttle to engage 6th gear above 50mph.

When warmed up 6th gear comes in on its own just above 50 mph.

The diesel engine does takes a long time to warm up, especially this time of year.

It's been like this since I bought the car two years ago - 52,000 miles on the clock.
