Travelling through Manchester today and the dreaded battery light comes on. On testing i get 12.1v at the battery, engine running obviously alternator shot. Priced a new Lucas alternator fitted, and it comes to £473 hopefully  covered on warranty, if not do you guys think this is reasonable, want it doing by tuesday.

s type alternators on eBay new, but depends what  model  you have £150 so get your spanners out and save yourself some money,  or get ripped off by the garages labour charge. any way good luck.

2.7 d, man has this car cost me some money. New Servo, vacuum pump, brakes and discs, egr valves, now the alternator. Would i change it? Not a snowballs chance in Hades. Got my XJ8 but love my S.

Update, car going in tomorrow for new Lucas alternator and serpentine belt, covered by warranty, cars covered 94000mls thinking of having the cam belt done while its in. What's the recommendation to have the cam belt done? got to be at its limit now. what do you guys think.

This car only does abot 3000 mls a year so maybe 12 months down the road, what do you think. Just to be sure though will get the mechanic to check for wear or cracking and go from there.

Well, Jaguar recommended 105000 miles and you can bet that was an underestimate

Having said that though I think they also suggested ten years if that was reached quicker so either way getting close.

All done, new alternator/serpentine belt all fitted, giving a nice 14.7v and my cam belt/belts are ok, luckily all done on  RAC warranty
