Just a quick question...

I have misplaced my handbook so need your help - does the S-type 2.7 diesel have a cambelt and, if so, at what mileage should it be changed?

had mine done at jaguar on fixed price deal, £375. major problem as one of the bolts snapped and the stud had to be extracted, no extra charge for this as was a fixed price. also included a good wash, and collection and delivery to my house. Still this price at moment

Is there any way of checking visually if a cam belt has been changed on a 2.7 s type 

Hi David, and welcome to the club.

Having a similar s type to yours I have had a look inside the engine compartment and decided that it it needs an expert.  If is has been serviced regularly and good garage will note things like that.

My car had a new engine while in Jaguar ownership at 21k miles so it will no need a cambelt change until next year.

there not visally easy to tell if they have been changed, as they look good when there old

also make sure they replace both belts, timing belt front of engine, fuel pump belt rear of engine

Thanks for the reply guys. I have another concern, after having a problem with EPB not releasing (I have managed to sort this myself by passing a 12v charge through the electronic module to reset park brake) but the red warning "service needed" is on dash. The problem is according to the service book the car is "FSH" and was serviced in July 1000 miles ago. Do I need to have the codes reset to clear the messages (which still has EPB not working, even though it now works).

the two are not related, disconnecting the battery usualy cures the epb fault, also a low battery will cause it aswell

the servive indicator just needs reseting, instructions below

It seems strange to some degree that different manufacturers advise different time/mileage criteria to changing the timing belts on our cars.  MGR it's 6yrs/90k miles, JLR 7yrs/105k (diesels).  My Jeep is 9yrs/120k.

They seem to attribute belt failure on almost anything but time/mileage.   So should the advice be change the water pump/tensioner/idler pulley at a given time/mileage and the belt as an aside?

manufactures give different time/mileage, due to different stresses the engine creates on the belt

a timing belt on a 4 cylinder 8 valve engine is going to be under less stress than say a 6 cylinder 24 valve engine

as for the water pump, as a general rule, if its driven by the cambelts, should be replaced at the same time as the timing belt, same with all bearing idlers and bearing tensioners on the timing belt
