Welcome to the club, Nigel.

The 2.0 litre Diesel is a well tried and trusted engine and has been know to last a long time --  over 200k miles.  The Estate is a good workhorse too.  My son has a 2006  model with over 100k on the clock, a but noisier than my s type 2.7D but a very good runner.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi

as with most cars check its all quiet,

diesels with high mileage can suffer with dual mass flywheel problems, rattling engine/gearbox, tend to go quiet when clutch is pressed

if its a all wheel drive model, take it for a test drive and get it up to 70 mph make sure its all quiet, also put some load on the engine, put it in a higher gear and put your foot down, this is the most common time that the car gets a limp home mode fault or engine management light

check all the electrics works, some electrical parts are expensive

last check the sills, there hit and miss really, there well hidden under a plastic cover, some cars sill's are known to completely rot out, no matter what year it is

cheers

Joe

interesting to read your comment about "get it up to 70 and check its quiet"

My x type estate was quite noisy at 70 but not at other speeds, I changed all the tyres (they were a bit mismatched ) for GT radials

The car was then much less noisy , but still there a bit of an increase in noise at 70MPG, but not at speeds above or below that, sounds like a diff type noise but if diff was worn you would hear it a various speeds. Never found an answer so decided to live with it. Other wise the car is a delight to drive and has proved more reliable than my previous range rover 4.2 Supercharged which went into a expensive sulk about twice a month.
