F-Pace Engine Failure

Jaguar F-Pace Advice gratefully received!
We bought a 3L V6 2016 Jaguar F-Pace from a Jaguar/ LR dealership and 33,000 miles later we have been told that the crank shaft/ engine has failed, leaving us with an engine replacement bill of between £9k & £15k.
A goodwill gesture from the dealership has been offered of 40% (taking the cost down from £15k to £9k).
If we opt to have the engine stripped to somehow prove that the engine was faulty when we bought the car (which would mean paying to have the engine stripped at our cost, around £2k) we potentially could get it replaced free under consumer rights act. But if the engine is stripped and Jaguar tell us the engine was perfect when we bought it, they could retract the goodwill taking us back up to £15k. Surely if a non serviceable part of the engine catastrophically fails, surely this is a manufacturing fault somewhere to cause this?
We bought the car second hand and have only had 9,000 miles out of it since it became ours.
What on earth would you do?

Has anyone had a similar experience or know of faults with these makes?  Have totally lost faith in our car now as well as Jaguar plus the gut wrenching worry of this huge unexpected bill 😩

Hi LCA

Devastating news, I myself now own a F-Pace (17 plate) and it does knock your confidence in the brand. I had a problem with my XF (64 plate) where the central junction box shorted out almost resulting in a fire. To cut a very long story short after facing a £1750 bill I firstly contacted Jaguar crc and then searched the net for simular situations. It turns out that a service bulitin had been published by Jaguar North America which concluded the headlight washer pump seal had failed and resulted in water tracking along the loom into the cjb (argued part not fit for purpose therefore caused fault). Armed with this information and a large number of emails later Jaguar graciously offered to pay for all repairs as well as a curtesy car. This brings me to your situation, I would search the net for any known faults (if you haven't already) which my have a direct bearing on you case. I did find a site the listing a number of F-pace faults, a couple are engine related.

Best of luck with your endeavours

Have you had a better resolution. Our 17 plate 3.0l has just done the same. It has full Jag service history infact was only serviced 4 weeks ago. A 4 year old car that now needs a complete new engine !

Just had the same issue. 18 plate F Pace 2.0 Diesel R Sport bought used in April'19 with 8k miles on clock. Gradually suffered loss of power over a period of time particularly uphill until last week when red warning lights and gone into limp mode. Had to be towed to dealer who advised new engine at £14k due to loss of compression. Will be looking for assistance from Jaguar.

Did anyone have any luck in getting help from Jaguar to pay for the bill? We have a 3l diesel foace, 2016 that just started making a tapping noise. Been told part of the engine is broke, 8k at least to fix it! We've had the car for almost 2 years, bought from an independent dealership.

Just had my 17 plate F-Pace 2.0D AWD R-sport suffer catastrophic engine failure last week, 55k miles just over 5 years old, with no engine warning light or other symptoms prior and having just completed a 180 mile round trip 2days before. I had it towed straight to a main dealer who since diagnosed it as turbo unit failure, which then has turbine fans shattered damaging engine and destroyed the DPF in the process, which requires a replacement of all 3. Credit to the main dealer they reported the case straight to JLR and have been talking to them on my behalf. After a week without my car JLR “factory” (guessing crc) have taken details of my V5, previously owned X-Type and case history and have so far offered 80% as goodwill. I’ve pushed back requesting more under Consumer Rights Act of 2015, that it is “not of satisfactory quality”, and that is not within expected life of the parts. this law states that then the manufacturer is liable to replace or repair with no cost to myself within a reasonable time frame and must ensure I do not suffer in-necessary inconvenience as a result. I’ll update as I find out more.

But it is clear that there are serious known defects and faults and that you can certainly get more than 40% OP has mentioned.

Update for you, after dealership arguing and being offered 80% as goodwill. I have then spoken to Jaguar warranty CRC team myself and then after explaining issues, citing it as a known issue and precedence of others cases. I then quoted Consumer a rights act of 2015 for faulty goods and that they need to cover 100%, repair or replace in a reasonable time without causing me un-necessary inconvenience the customer service advisor still would budge so I demanded escalation to senior management and call back. The manager called and advised they are now covering 100% of repairs for new turbo, engine and DPF.

Result.   !!!!!!!!!!!!

Well done and not the usual Jaguar attitude to engine failures I suspect.

Regards, John

Agreed, totally diff experience dealing with issues and even CRC team compared to when I had and reported issues during warranty. I was relieved to say the least. Big Credit to Listers Jaguar of Solihull, they certainly fought my corner without me even needing to ask them or argue for it on top they even ordered the parts off their own back yesterday to reduce wait times before they knew my decision or outcome, new engine should arrive tomorrow and my car is in the shop having the parts stripped out ready for replacements.

I have just had a very similar issue. 2016 F-Pace with about 65,000 miles on the clock, which my local garage has said has suffered 'catastrophic engine failure.' They have suggested I take it up with Jaguar and the local dealership has just given me their 'phone number.

I have read the advice above, but anything further is gratefully received.

In a similar way to some of the above cases, it was driving fine, then lost power and displayed a 'restricted performance' warning before failing completely.

I am really disappointed and did not expect this from Jaguar.

I am just going through the same issue. 54k on the clock, 2017 plate 2.0L F-Pace, Full service history, last Oil change just two months ago. We have been told by the independent delaer that we bought it from last year that it has suffered major engine failure and will most likely require a new engine. The car is just on its way into the Jaguar dealer for them to re-diagnose the fault, but expecting the same result. I am really worries about the repair bill, I can't believe we would be in this position with a car that is only four years old. Any advise on how to deal with Jaguar greatly received.

Best that you thoroughly read the above experiences and then deal direct with Jaguar Dealer (or ultimately Jaguar directly) in a calm, firm and polite manner to start with. If it becomes necessary you will have to ramp up your mode of approach and quote any relevant consumer laws as appropriate.

I am not aware of any warranty / guarantee that you have from the selling dealer and you have not stated how long ago you purchased the car. I believe all of this will become very relevant in any negotiations over who is paying for what.

Good Luck and Best Wishes . Regards John.

Thanks John. I spoke to the dealer today, who have advised that a new engine will be required.
I bought the car 15 months ago, so out of the standard Jaguar warranty and the independent dealer 12 month warranty also!

I will wait and see what response I get from Jaguar customer service team, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst I think.

Good luck and hoping for the best. If not you are going to be in for a major expense. It has been revealed on this forum that others with F Pace engines having to be replaced have had some good results from Jaguar Customer Service.

Best Wishes and Regards, John

Hi All

Very glad to have found this thread!  My 67 plate F-Pace broke down (EGR pipe broken).  Took it to Jag dealership and in the routine healthcheck they advise issues with Oil leakage.  I authorise 3 hours of diagnostics and am advised I need  new engine!  I asked what the cause was and the garage don't know - can only deal with the symptoms which is 3 of the 4 cylinders have low pressure.  Jag would take the engine back from them and investigate after I agree to the repair.  Contacted Jag directly and a week later they come back with 40% gesture of goodwill.  I haven't accepted and will continue to pursue.

Car has just under 150k miles and less then 5 years old.  Bought from Jaguar and serviced (and repaired) by Jaguar throughout.  One repair about 12k miles ago was on "piston cooling Oil solenoid".  Anyone know if this is something that could impact the engine?

Thanks in advance for any helpful comments!

Similar to these stories I have a 66 plate F-Pace 3.0l V6 AWD; dashboard lit up in fast lane of M25 and we lost all power and managed to get it into hard shoulder with 2 x kids in the car (yesterday of all days!!). Now it no longer starts. Had to get it towed home due to car seats in vehicle not fitting in recovery truck (long story - no isofix) and am getting an independent Jag specialist to see if he can diagnose issue but based on this thread seems like it could be expensive. It's on PCP so realistically I'll just give the car back to them. Just gone over 50k miles that same day! Been a great car otherwise; totally lost confidence in it now.

Hi all,

TURBO FAILURE £20k replacement engine work!

Any urgent advice would be greatly appreciated. Never thought I would be in this situation and truly heartbroken! I bought a 2017 F-Pace Portfolio from a Jaguar Dealer in July 2019 for just shy of £27k. It had 55k on the clock. I have never bought any car more than about £13k previously with experience of smaller BMW, Audi, VW, all doing mileages well into the late 150k+. But with a young and growing family I chose to up our motoring game to what I thought would be the height of our car buying abilities and have great motoring adventures together. During it's time with us I have had the timing chains replaced after stretching (under Jaguar warranty) - Around £2k of work, along side DAB failure, as well as inoperable front headlamp. Then last year, June'22, the car came to a spluttering stop in the middle of a four lane dual carriageway.  AA towed to Jag dealer to be informed that the crank pulley had "fallen apart" and split the intake hose. Another £2k, not covered by the select extended warranty I took out, with a small contribution returned by JLR after a fair amount of calls.

A few weeks ago, the car again spluttered to a stop. AA towed to the same dealer to be informed that the turbo had failed and the "catastrophic engine failure", as well as CATS and DSP gone. The car has done 89k now. The dealer came back and said that it would cost £19,500 to sort. At which point I was speechless, and haven't really recovered from the news yet. The warranty guys have been out and assessed the car and agreed on the £3k max contribution that the select agreement has. I never thought that there would be such damage to require much for than twice this amount - in my thinking of worst case scenarios! How wrong was I? the dealership have informed me that the nut that holds the turbo on came off! How can a car which cost over £50k new, have such a weak spot of weakness to need nearly £20k of work on it? I have called JLR customer relationship and after a large number of calls and hard work trying to get hold of someone (they were very pleasant and understanding on the phone) but have now offered to contribute 20% of the costs (£3600) as a gesture of good will. I don't have a spare £14k to spend on fixing my car! My kids wont get anywhere near the things i would have liked to have provided them with this year, like a holiday etc, if I have to spend this much to get a car back on the road. I can't afford to just throw £18-20k value of car away. JLR have also said that I must decide before the end of the month if I want to get the work carried out! I have seen that there is a court case in the states regarding this engine (in disco's too I think?) I have also seen that a fair number of people have had this problem. I know that the car is now 6 years old and with nearly 90k on the clock, I do expect motoring bills, but this is beyond a joke.

Can anyone give me additional help with this?

I even bought a diecast model, Jaguar jumper and laptop case! I was all in with JLR. Have lost complete faith in them. My 3 series had 240k on the clock, my audio 193k. I can go on.....

Thanks in advance.

Hi Willmjw,

I don't know why they wont tell you what has happened and why... that sounds very odd. That is the info I would want. Have they said why they wont tell you?

Cheers

My 2017 F Pace with 55,000 miles on the clock since new has just suffered the same catastrophic engine failure. I have had an exchange engine fitted but I no longer trust the car. These engines aren’t fit for purpose and are failing within the expected lifespan. I’ve just raised a complaint with Jaguar and am seeking full compensation. Would be interested to hear if anyone has had any success with compensation

Dear Phil, same happened to me and my 2017 F-Pace at 60,000miles.  Although I had extended guarantee,  I had to fight for months with Jaguar in order for them to pay for replacing the engine.  More battles were to be had when both the tubo and manifold failed.  In the end, armed with loads of patience, phone calls and emails bombardment to all I could think of,  jaguar paid out for the work (however they void all guarantee on their work!)  A tiring process and totally disgraceful situation.  which is not what you expect from such a reputable company.  Good luck .
