Lost in Arizona

Hello Everyone, New Jag owner here. Bought a 2004 S Type with 35,000 on it, manufacture in UK.. Car is a beauty inside and out except for a couple of amber warning dash light. Message in the center dash reads ABS FAULT  and DSC not available,  and Air Bag indicator that stays on. I took it to a local mechanic , not a jag dealer, to have the Oil changed and a brief look over. The dealer wanted $300.00 us dollars for an Oil change. Anyways he put his OBD reader on it and it came back with front passenger side wheel not communicating with ABS system. The mechanic not being familiar with Jags, actually he said it was the first one he had worked on, suspected that there was a loose/corroded  or a chewed through wire between the ABS wheel sensor and the ABS pump module. The car drives and stops just fine but I do not like that there is warning light on in the dash. I am very familiar with the basics of a car and have always preformed my own repairs but this car intimidates me and I am afraid  of doing more harm than good if I do my own repairs on it. So my main questions are is there any helpful DO'S and DON'TS that I should know about before I try to do my own repairs. And is the ABS situation a common problem and easy to fix. I have a lot of more comments to say as far as background info on the car but will hold off on them and cross my fingers that someone on this chat board will be willing to help me answer some of my question.

hello thanks for the reply i start the car and the airbag icon on the dash starts to flash like a code it flash's once then a slight paus the flashes nine more times . it does this a couple of times then it stays on until i shut the car off. another question what the hell is with the lug nuts on the car. i do not have the lug key i do see that there are caps over the lug nuts how do you get these off without destroying the caps.

hello Jim , that fact that you are willing to help out some one you don't even know tells that you are among the few people out there that are  truly kind hearted and not selfish. I would like to send you some cookies at Christmas time to show my appreciation. I will search my ALLDATA to inform myself what a clockspring in the steering wheel is and read up on the repair. Or is this something I should leave up to a Jaguar dealer or a well experienced mechanic. The area of the steering column is a place I don't like to mess with myself. Along time ago I had been messing around with a Fiat and got my hand stuck behind the dash. Not sure what I had touched but I was getting zapped continually until I unstuck my hand. I had to sit there for a few minutes until the hair on my head  laid back down. About the lug nuts, all the video's I have watched so far  seems like the inevitable of the chrome caps spinning are going to give me problems so I should defiantly heed your suggestion and deal with them now before I get stuck on the road with a flat tire. I checked out the e-bay listing you mentioned and they do look exactly what I need. I do have a question and it is not car related. I was looking at code readers on Diagnostic World and the listing on the lugs. When I do a conversion of US dollars to UK do I go with the GBP or the EUR  conversion. I am not sure about the Brexit status you have been going through so a quick one word answer would work. Now about the ABS the guy who changed the Oil for me had a code reader that he put on the car hopefully he was resting the change Oil thingy on the car but he said as I mentioned in my initial post that the front passenger wheel was not communicating with the module your reply was that is easy fix can you elaborate a little more is most likely just acumination of dirt or you mean the sensor is fairly readily accessible to replace or can I just erase the code. The previous owner mentioned that he addressed the ABS  and his mechanic replaced so fuse located under the front seat location of the car ? but it did not fix it obviously. Sorry that I am blah blah blahing  but as I learn more about the car it will become a lot less blah blah. Thank you for your time. Edith

Hi Edith,

My, my, my, what a very gracious offer but there really is no need, a simple thanks is all I require to be safe in the knowledge that I may have helped in some small way.

One by one then, first the clockspring. This is what you require, https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/550279232

Just search your own version of eBay and then you won’t need to worry about converting currency.

And this is how to change it, https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s-type-s-type-r-supercharged-v8-x200-15/how-s-type-clock-spring-removal-faq-61287/ please heed the warning if you are at all unsure.

Lug nuts, again if you search your version of eBay for the same lug nuts I linked to earlier you will find them.

For the front ABS sensor, this is what you need, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JAGUAR-S-TYPE-FRONT-ABS-SENSOR-FIT-ALL-MODELS-02-08-EXCELLENT-COND-/183780939163?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338268676&toolid=10044&customid=EAIaIQobChMI5fyG-_rQ8wIVbUaRBR2s1wvOEAQYAyABEgLIGvD_BwE

As for a code reader, the one I have is the icarsoft 930 and is ideal for your car. If you do get one make sure it is for Jaguar only and Diagnostic World is a good place to get one from.

Hope this helps,

Jim

Welcome to the Club, Edith.

I am delighted to see an s Type in Arizona.  I saw one in Phoenix when I visited Arizona a few years ago.

I have had an s type for the last 8 years and have really enjoyed it.

So enjoy your Jaguar and I have noted that Jim has been very helpful.

Regards,

Peter.
