What do you actually mean by a "dead engine". Is it that the engine will not start or is it that the engine has seized solid. A few details may help in receiving any advice or opinions.

Welcome to the club, Roisin.

Have you any reason why the engine is dead?  That would help.

Regards,

Peter.

The garage has said it has lost Oil pressure, when they managed to start it, it makes a loud knocking sound and probably needs a new engine.

Sounds serious and if it is a loud haeavy sounding knock is probably "Big End Trouble". Will be expensive to repair. I imagine your choices are:

1/ Have the engine repaired........... probably not a good financial action.

2/ Buy a good secondhand engine and have it fitted .......... again probably a dear financial action.

3/ Advertise the car, outlining the fault and hope to get a reasonable offer from someone who has or can acquire a replacement engine. Again not going to be a financial success I would think. Sometimes your first loss is your best loss.

I am assuming this car has no sort of warranty or guarantee that you could try claiming on.

Best Wishes for an acceptable outcome. Regards, John
