would just like to say, following a 450 mile trip, mostly motorway, my 2.5 v6 4wd x-type gave me a return of 37 mpg. wasnt to light footed either

I used to get somewhere round that if the motorway was reasonable when I had my x type AWD 2.5.  Steady was the keyword.

I get 26 MPG on a run, and with the short trips it averages out at 22 MPG , but I knew that when I bought it, and it is a 5 litre, 510 BHP supercharged engine after all. But I still think it is a cracking car !

              It used to belong to one of the Jaguar directors , and was lent to me when my Aston Martin DB9 was run into by another customer doing exstensive damage when it was in the stealership for a service. .

 

I liked it so much they said I could keep in in exchange for the Aston, which is good as it is ten times the car , and faster

 

I use the power mainly for overtaking.

Trevor, I used to get nearly the same mileage per gallon on a Mk 1 Ford Escort 1.3 L.  It shows how much engines have improved over the years.  On the 410 miles I have done in the last 3 days on very busy motorways, M25 included I have got 42 mpg.

 

Like Mick, I would be tempted to give the right side pedal a bit of a firm push occasionally!

              I agree, i've never had a car that's done more than 25 mpg , and it's only the last five that have been "sporty jobs" . but MPG isn't the first thing I look for in a car anyhow , and being an old boy the insurance is a lot cheaper than most peeps, so i'm not restricted on what vehicle I have to buy .

 

The only thing that grates is having to pay more road tax, I think it should be done on miles travelled and should be added to the fuel price

I have thought that for years, even the years I was doing a big mileage. [i did eventually get the the magic plastic] The The company car was taxed initially for those earning over £5000 a year, and then lifted by Denis Healy to £8600 in the 1979 budget.  It still stands at that figure.

 

Anything to do with cars is a cash cow for whatever Government

Hello,

The best I have had from my S-TYPE 2.7 is 53.9 to Cornwall, but driving Miss Daisy did'nt come into it.

My wife has had a bad neck injury in the past, and does not do fast, but then nor do I.

So the trip was no more than 65mph.

normally I get around 42 on half decent roads, and 26 when towing our twin axle caravan.

 

I have no idea what the best figure other people have, but it may even improve when it is run in, as it has only done 23000 miles from new.

If I was to keep it until it is fully run in I would around 100 years old at rate of 3000miles a year.

 

Now sadly I am selling the Jaguar for none other than personal reasons, and certainly not to do with the car.

Hi Trevor,

 

Fast is not as important as style.  The s type has style as well as fast.

 

Towing a caravan tought me both patience and good driving techniques, and when I stopped towing when I was 77, I did enjoy driving for the pleasure it brought.

 

Economy is the back pocket element of driving a car, but keeping young is the right foot and ask your wife for a pay rise is the other part.

 

Enjoy both.

Dear Peter,

                       I agree about style, that's why i think I still prefer the old style Jags to mine , also, the Astons had style, but that's where it ended . .

 

Caravans ! the bane of the Wesr Country, we cannot move for them in the Summer, we even build hotels for peeps, but they still insist on clogging up our roads with them.

 

 I don't have to ask the wife for a pay rise, she is the one who's always ecouraging me to buy different cars, and has bought me a new one for my birthday for the last four years  (it's a good job I win most months on the premium bonds !).

 

She is pestering me to get the F type Coupe when it comes out, but if I get one it will be next year when the first MOT is due on this XJ, and they will be a bit more of a sensible price .
