I have had cars of every colour and the dark ons have been the best.  My current S type had a coating which worked well, but not as well at the ceramic coating non my wife's car.  Ceramic had not been invented when I had my s type treated, but its dark blue is rather good especially when it is sunny when it seeks to change. My two black Rover's were very good, even though my company did not bother treating them,

I am still having thoughts on giving my s type a ceramic coating, bit it does look rather good.  I would get your black car a coating.

A quick answer is "Yes".  My locknut is with the spare wheel in the boot.

Having a spare wheel is a bit antiquated but very useful and better than a tube of something that works once.

The s type was designed in 1999 and 53,000 were sold in 1999  ---  this could mean that the 1999 model could have "overlapped" over the year as often happens.

The book below covers the S Type and there was a lot of research done inspite of the 1989 instead of the correct 1999.  Otherwise the research was exact and I say that because I wrote the book and spent 2 years doing it.

I bought a 2012 disc for my s type in 2014 and it has worked correctly all the time. £25 well spent.

There sometimes need a clean like any disc.

You can get two key fobs without the electronic for about £25. [Palison, 49 Kenly road, London. SW193JJ]  Getting the electrical pad is more difficult and you will need a locksmith for that.

You need to find a good locksmith in your area.

I don't have the problem with my s type.  I have a speed control  on the passenger seat in the car who ensures that the speed of my s type never exceeds 70 mph.

Hi Alistair, and welcome to the club.

I live in a suburban house which the local chaffinches, starlings and pigeons with the odd magpies visit the robins and thrushes that live here.  So I also have a problem which I try to cure with a large water pistol which is useful in pointing our visitors to other houses.  There is also  a spray available that can remove the Five Aitch One Tea.  My Jaguar has a hard top which makes it easier.

I did hear some years ago that a nice gentleman was the victim of a seagull and asked his wife for a tissue.  She replied "Don't be silly, it's miles away now."

The best solution is keep the roof down!!

I was the Branch Secretary of all the 2000 staff branch members and the name Lionel Buck is well known to me.  I became a full time officer in 1970 and went to our Sheffield office and then a Regional Secretary to the West Midlands Office.  I retired when I was 65 and remained in the Midlands.

Hi Andy,

There is a part on the forum which lists a lot of garages -- Jaguar Owners Lounge.  I have had a look through this and can't find anything close to Wrexham.  The nearest was Manchester although I would guess that there are good garages closer.

At a fairly wild guess I would suggest you look at "Mobile Car services" on the internet.  There appear to be quite a few wanting to do mobile work.

I used to live in Shotton when the Steelworks was in its prime, and was able to have my car serviced in the garage at the works --  17/6 for a good service and Oil change in 1967 - 1970 was rather good!

I have had my S type 2.7D[07 plate] for 8 years and I have never had the DPF amber light come on.  I do a lot of short runs, particularly when the Covid virus lockdowns are in force.

I use premium fuel and an additive which keeps the fuel system clean.  I also try to have a run at over 45 mph for about 30 minutes once a week. 100mph is not necessary, especially in an area that has motorways are often have  limited  speeds due to the amount of traffic at most times.

If the amber light could talk it would say "Fix it now and don't mess around".  You should now get the DPF dealt with by a garage.

Removing the innards of the DPF is illegal and you will fail an MOT.  Don't do it.

The battery should always be properly connected.  Also batteries on the s type last no longer than about 5 years, so if your battery is older I would recommend a new one, making sure it is a correct one.

I am also a little surprised at the absence in the  of quite a few Jaguar owners, and that includes the F type which is a very good successor to the E Type.

I have only been in one F Type and guess that there are not many around.

Both of the cars you are looking at sound quite good.

I would not be worried about the cam chain at all.  If the engine on the cars you are looking at has a cam belt it is usually 10 years or 105,000 miles.

My s type has the 2.7 diesel engine and has 86,000 miles on the clock  and had a new engine while at the dealers when 2 years old under warranty  --  the cam belt has not been changed as a very good mechanic saw it and felt that it was in a very good condition.-, even though it was 12 years old!

It doesn't surprise me when the battery is fading.  It happened to me when a 3 year old battery was past its best. If you have a good mechanic in the area, a visit to him/her would be the best option.

There are three options:-  1.  Tyre repair inflator plus gunk.

                                             2.  Space saver spare wheel.

                                             3.  A real spare wheel.

I might be old fashioned but I have a real spare wheel which was provided in the factory as an optional extra. It gives me a good feel when driving.

Hi John,

What you have said is so true.  There are so many people who allow their tyres to wear till the last minute.

I am regarded by some as a nut case for changing my tyres while there is still "some life in them".

I was coming back from work in 1963 when an  e-type passed me on the Chestier by-pass with on of his tyres having bare canvas.  Luckily I was driving a fast motorcycle and I was able to catch him.  He was horrified but I think he learned a lesson!

Hi John,

I had a pothole blowout 18 months ago.  I checked the tyre in question and found that the rim was safe and undamaged and there appeared to be enough strength in the tyre to allow me to drive safely the mile and a half home at 10 mph.
