  1. Hi Andy,

    Personally I don't feel the anything will be achieved by blocking off the EGR valves.  Experts designed these rather good engines, and it is the government + climate control regulations the has introduced  EGR Valves, DPFs, and other additions to the exhaust systems.

    Not being a design engineer I tend to go along with the principle that I should manage my car in the condition it left the factory. [mine left the production line in Castle Bromwich on 13th March 2007, and only the Leaping Jaguar on the bonnet is what is different.

    The engine is the same - no remapping or similar "improvements" -- the exhaust will last as long as the car being of stainless steel and I guess the car will last as long as me. [I am now heading towards my 85th Birthday.]

    The cost of maintenance of a Jaguar is not that high if you look towards preventing problems rather than fixing them after the event.

    My recommendation is Premium fuel and the odd additive.  Changing the Oil when it needs doing.  Checking the tyres, the battery, and the engine fluids. 

    But that's just me.  I have a degree in nitpicking but it does seem to work.

    I do not use Supermarket fuel, as there is a Shell station 500 yards away from where I live, but I do know a few who have never had a problem with it and a few who have.

    While that is not a useful answer I would think that if the engine is not operating correctly after a fuel fill up I would suggest either cleaning out the engine by removing the fuel or using a fuel system cleaning additive.  Diesel engines are usually very sensitive to fuel quality, and if your car is a diesel using a premium fuel is always recommended.

    I have just had the same experience, and what I did was to call out the AA on Sunday morning.

    Result:- As below.

    The AA mechanic was brilliant and his testing showed that the OBD2 diagnosis of Code P0404 was a faulty EGR valve that was causing the gas circulation  around the valves and was the left side ]EGR valve 1] that was completely dead.  I already knew the code P0402 was valve 2 not working correctly.  Diagnosis was EGR valves were in need of replacement.

    Carl has ordered 2 EGR valves and as he is on holiday next week he is fitting them on 22nd Jan.

    Just got my quote [exact] for two EGR valves for my s type.  My mechanic got a discount on genuine Jaguar EGR valves coming in a £135 each, £50n each off the standard price of £185.

    Add Labour at £150 I will pay £420.  Less than I thought.

  5. Hi Tim,

    I have been very lucky with the DPF issue so far.  I think that there is something awry with your car, though.  I would have thought that there would have been some kind of amber warning that the DPF was getting ready for regeneration or indicating that a regeneration is taking place.  I have heard that the revs increase when a regeneration is occurring, but personally I have never had that happen.  I would be inclined to go to eBay for a replacement, get the MOT, and then find someone who knows about cars rather than someone who is going to tell you that there isn't a problem, really.

    On another slightly different topic, my s-type is sitting on my driveway waiting for the mechanic I have used for over 17 years to ring me us with a price to replace both EGR valves which are causing the restricted performance message.  I don't expect a figure less than £360 for the two and that is without the fitting cost, probably about £100.  A main dealer would be charging much more than that!

    I assume your x type has the 2.2 litre diesel engine.

    If so, I would advise that the new MOT rules say that if the DPF has been removed it will be an automatic failure.  If you are lucky, the tester will think that it has not been removed.  If unlucky you will be looking at four figures to replace the DPF.

     I also had company cars for 30 years, but I did retire prior to the s type being manufactured. My Rover Sterling was the car of choice in 1999 but when I retired it in 2011 a Jaguar was them my choice.  After an X Type AWD which was borrowed by two scroats who were given free accommodation by Her Majesty for 8 years and I bought my s type in June 2013.  I have only had one real repair made when the water pump failed and I had to shell out £135 for a new one to be fitted.

    The s type  --  I have the 2.7 diesel SE with many bells and whistles -- drives beautifully and on one occasion I managed to get 50.2 mpg in the 90 mile drive to Sheffield.

    One little piece of advice is to use Premium Fuel, and the odd occasional additive to keep the fuel system clean.

    The X type is a good car and nice to drive.  I had an X Type 2.5 litre AWD whichI thoroughly enjoyed.

    One little bit of advice is to use premium fuel, as it does make a difference with diesel engines.

    You will enjoy the Jaguar experience.
