  1. I changed my battery in December 2016, when it was just 5 years old.

    We have a small accessory shop  very close to where we Iive which I always use.  I got a Platinum Battery fitted for £102.  They are heavy things to lift!

  2. Hi David,

    I always book my S Type in for MOT quite early.   This year, and for the first time I got a fail, but there is a twist in the tail.  I had two headlamp bulbs  fitted by Halfords  --  just 20% better front lighting.  The failure was due to the fact that the setting was way out from the correct one.  Luckily, the tester readjusted the setting and retested at no extra cost.  

    Guess the moral of the story!

    Not a good start, but I am sure that when it gets fixed you will certainly enjoy the S Type.

    I have a similar model to yours and the 2.7 diesel is a great engine, quite quick and very economical, with bags of room inside.

    I think that the touch screen unit is possible and there are several knowledgeable members who can advise.  When Paul [Raistlin] spots this post I am sure he will give you some very expert advice.

  4. Hi Seamus and welcome to the Club.

    What engine does you car have?

    If it is a diesel engine, I would recommend Millers Eco Plus [diesel] which I use and which keeps the fuel system clean.  Since starting to use it a couple of years ago I have never had the engine amber warning light come on telling me the EGR valves needed cleaning.

    I also recommend you use Premium Fuel as it does give a better mpg and a smoother ride.

Ian Callum had a big job on his hands when he was asked  to take over the job of Design Director after the death of Geoff Lawson.  While he was and still is an admirer of the S Type quite a few people did not like the retro design and some did not think that the S Type was suitable for a medium sized luxury car.  There is much in the XF from the S Type apart from engines  ---  the steering, the brakes, and the suspension, all of which are well tested.  The mesh radiator grill on the face lifted s type is now common on all Jaguars. Ian Callum did listen to comment, and while there is some opinion of the exterior design of the XF, it has proved to be a good base for the SUV which again was built for those who wanted  that type of car.

    If you do look at the XF, and its smaller and larger family, and you make a comparison with the S Type, you will see that theXF carries some of the characteristics, with the main one being the atmosphere.  The XF certainly has that!

  6. Hi Paul,

    At a guess, the badges on the grill and the steering wheel were put on in the factory, and the badge on the rear would be put on or not been put on at the dealership.  I have heard that there are drawers at some dealerships filled with badges that never were put on.

    My S type only has the S Type badge on the rear, although some I have seen have the 2.7 D or the 3.0 badges on the rear.

  7. Hi Steve,

    My s type is an automatic and it makes driving along the lanes quite easy, although the big diesel can be a bit thirsty on short trips.  Being retired for almost 20 years I don't do many short trips in the Jaguar, just occasional long ones which keeps the DPF regenerated, and the short trips are in SWMBO,s Toyota Yaris Hybrid.

    My x type was manual, and like yours, only got into top gear at 60 mph.

    The mpg you quote seems very satisfactory and shows that your engine is going well,  ---   I got 44.5mpg going the 190 miles to Weymouth a couple of weeks ago in my 2.7 diesel s type.  I always use premium diesel which I find gives a better performance and mpg.

    You will enjoy the x type  -- a good smooth ride - I had a 2.5 petrol AWD which was a very good car.

    To get the key fob working an auto electrician should be able to do the job, and there are also some good locksmiths too.

    In the Midlands where I live there are several mobile auto locksmiths who advertise key programming  --- there could be some in Kent.

    When I was towing a caravan I found the best option for tow bars was to go and have a chat with a big caravan dealership and ask them the question.  The other option is to look up a tow bar specialist.

    The Jaguar label on top of the battery seems a clue to the fact that the battery was Jaguar fitted..  I always write the date of fitting a new battery on the battery myself.

    The varta battery I changed  last year was one that you didn't have to top up with distilled water, which is an indication of its age.

  12. Welcome to the club, Adam.

    The x type estate 2.0D is a very sturdy workhorse when you need one, and the engine is a well tested Ford engine.

    I would get it checked out by a good mechanic, or the AA or RAC who should probably highlight any issues.

    It is also worth checking the MOT history  ---  just look up the registration number of the Free App   Vehicle Smart   which out to give you a good start.

  13. Hi Graham,

    On the s Type there is a function that when you turn off the ignition and take out the key, the seat moves fully back, and the steering wheel moves upwards. You can get out quite easily.  When you get in and put the ignition key in and close the door, the seat returns to its set position, as does the steering wheel.   I was assuming the the XK had the same function.

    In my wife's car, [Toyota Yaris] I move the seat back manually, which also makes it easy.

  14. Hi Matt,

    Two weeks ago I went to Weymouth for a quiet holiday.  About 120 miles on the M5 with usual heavy traffic in places and about 50 miles on a mix of mostly single carriageway and some dual carriageway. I got 44.5 mpg driving down and 44.4 mpg coming back.  I only used Cruise control now and then because of the speed controls on Smart Motorway sections.

    Local short runs and ordinary use I get around 30 mpg.  I have the S Type 2.7 litre diesel , so I reckon that what you get is OK.  I did get 50.2 mpg on an 80 mile drive with 50 mpg speed limit on the M1.  If you cruised at a similar speed you would probably get the same, plus some salutes from motorists behind you.

    I had guessed that sciatica was the problem as a colleague when I was still working was told by a Doctor to get an automatic car.  That then became an option on company cars - just a year after I retired.

    Getting older is a problem, which is the main reason I did not sell the house to buy an F Type, which is do find difficult to get into and more to get out .

    But seriously, sciatica does affect me and the left knee is the problem with the sciatic nerve starting in the lower back and affecting the left knee on it's way down to the toes.
