  1. Welcome to the club, Murray.

I had motor cycles during my younger days and during the time prior to the 70 mph speed limit. The Jaguar experience with "Grace, Pace and Space" is one that gives you more thrills than 120 mph on an empty dual carriageway.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  2. Hi Phil,

There have been several members who have done this job, and it appears not too difficult to do.

It could also be possible to get one from a breakers, which would make the job simpler.

    Try    jaguarparts247.co.uk      -------   07748280772  &  [email protected]

    or     [email protected]    -----    07484070632.

I have used both and found that you can talk to the owners of both easy to talk to.

    Regards,

    Peter.

     Hi Joe,

A new engine could cost £5k and at a guess spending £500 is a good value.  My s type is still in mint condition, sills OK, leather interior well looked after, so I will be setting aside my winter heating "gift" from the Government fo starters!

    Regards,

    Peter.

  4. Hi Simon,

The new engine was put in when my car was in Jaguar Ownership at a Main Dealer in Exeter.and before I bought it.  I guessed that it was being driven by one of the staff at the dealership as I was told that was probably the Oil pump that failed, in which case a message would have come up on the dashboard and the engine warning light would have been red.  At a guess I think that the member of staff disregarded the warning light and let the engine seize.  Driver error rather than an engine failure.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  5. Hi Simon, and welcome to the Club.

I also have an S type 2.7  [07] diesel with 79k on the clock, but which had a new engine at 28k after 2 years which means that the nine has done 51k.

The mechanic who has looked after my cars for 16 years to my satisfaction told me he has never come cross a cam belt break when the engine has done less mileage than the mileage stipulated.  My car will be due for 10 years next March.  He told me that he does not think it necessary, but will do it if I feel it is needed. So, basically my choice..

Much depends on how much I have in my my back pocket next march.

    Regards,

    Peter

  6. Hi Mike,

I have come across this before.  A member, who had just bought a Jaguar found that the heating and demist systems were not working and when I said it could be the battery he told me that a new one was fitted by the dealer from whom he bought it, and sent me a photograph.  The battery was a 500amp and would have just about started a mini.

I have a Platinum 800 amp on my Jaguar and as I don't do many long trips I put in on charge once a fortnight.  Luckily I have an exterior socket outside the garage, and it is doing its job now.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  7. Hi Rick, and welcome to the club.

Joe has already said what I thought.   I do think that a previous owner has been very active with embroidering you car, as certainly the R badge on the side of the car is not a Jaguar  idea.

The vin number should give you more detail.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  8. Welcome to the club, Neil.

Your S Type is an earlier model to mine so I cannot check out he faults on my car.

I take it that the door  open warning does not come on when the demist is not being used, so i would guess that there is something wrong with demist connection which also could affect the antennae which I guess also is on the rear on the car.

I could be totally wrong, and hope if I am those members more au fait with electrical systems will correct me and assist you .

    Regards,

    Peter.

  9. No, Frank, I meant beat the computer estimate, so for 42 mpg I would be looking for 43+ mpg.

Cruise control will give you the best mpg as it will choose the most appropriate gear.

The big diesel runs very smoothly at 70 mph and on the s type around 2000 rpm on he flat, and not much more going uphill.

I just filled up with bp Ultimate, I went as soon as the light came on and it took £105 worth and is now showing a range of 550 miles, the mpg (according to the trip computer is 42 mpg (not been on a run yet, so I'm quite impressed)

Did you ever go to Cuerden Valley Park? It's just by me and a lovely place!

    Hi Frank,

I am afraid I never went to Cuerden Valley Park --  cyclists in a Club never seemed to go to places of beauty, just paces where they could get a cold beer and a cheese sandwich.

My aim is usually to try to beat the computer on a long run mainly by driving with cruise control on at 70 mph on a motorway.  I always fill up when the light comes on or if the local Shell Station has put the price down.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  11. Hi Mike,

Taking the car on a run to ensure battery charge is effected should not be a problem, and the steps you have detailed are ideals rather than necessities.   I Iive in a busy conurbation and do a lot of shorter runs so I do need to keep that battery well charged.  I have a little C Tek "traffic Light" which will go from red to amber on a 3 mile drive. While a longer run is needed, I just drive and find that about 30 miles will see my battery fully charged no matter what speed I do. I do put by battery on charge about every two weeks if I have not done a longer run.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  12. Hi Nathan,

Some years ago a local club member had exactly the same problem  -- his 2.2 diesel X type would not start from hot.

He was advised by a main dealer that the glow plugs and injectors needed replacing  --  cost £1200.  Instead he had his engine Terracleaned at a cost of £115.  The car has worked well since.

I would suggest an even cheaper way.  I use a shot of Millers Eco Plus [diesel] every other fill up, as well as also using premium fuel.  My S type 2.7 diesel is delighted with Millers one a month!

Leaving the car on tick over to run for a minute or even a ten seconds rest after stopping does allow the turbo to stop turning and is recommended so I don't think that has anything to do with the problem.

Let us know how you get on.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  13. Hi Ian,

I had 29 years of company cars, and my knowledge of modern cars was negligible as all services and repairs had to go to a main dealer, so buying a Jaguar made me enter into a new experience,    with the windscreen wipers coming on when it rained and the lights coming on when it was dark, messages telling you if a door was slightly open, and the dash board  lights coming on when something was happening when the ECU didn't like something.  The lump hammer was no longer needed in the boot and instead a Code Reader had to be bought.

I have had a great time with my S Type, and very little cost with only a water pump needing replacement.  The diesel engine in the s type is a very good engine and was developed to a 3.0 litre to meet EU6 requirements for use in the XF and XJ.  BUT it does like premium fuel and rewards you with a smooth ride and good mpg for spending an extra 10p a litre.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  14. Hi Frank,

When I was living in Widnes I used to cycle around your area  --  a nice day out with fresh air instead of the smell of sulphuric Acts.

I use Shell V Power , although BP premium fuel is good.  I have a Shell Station just up the road.  I also use Millers Eco Plus [Diesel] in the tank once every second or third fill up.  I find it gives you a better mpg and it does keep your Diesel Particulate filter clean, and stops the EGR valves getting sticky, as well giving you a smooth ride.  Going down to Dorset last month I got 44.5mpg on the way down and  44.4 mpg on the way back mostly at between 60 and 70 mph.

    Regards,

    Peter.

  15. Welcome to the Club, Frank.

Your XJ is the Jaguar Flagship car, and rightly so.  The Jaguar experience is quite unique  and you can feel that when you drive.

I hope you also enjoy the club and share experiences.

    Regards

Peter.  [There were two of us, also]

  16. Welcome to the Club, Carl.

Like you, I have always wanted a Jaguar since I saw a friend restoring a Mk 1 in 1963.  It took a long time but I have now had my s type for just over 5 years and have really enjoyed the drive, and the comfort.

Joe has given you some good advice, and yes, they can rust, but a bit of good news [for me] is mine are OK!

    Regards,

    Peter.
