XF spewing stuff out of exhaust in traffic

Hi, only had XF about a month, love it so far and had no problems. However, when I'm stuck in traffic, I notice loads of steam (?) coming out of the exhaust. When the road clears then it's fine. is this normal or is there anything I can do to stop this? Thanks.

Hi Tom

I think you will find this quite normal I think you will find its the hot exhaust gases

going into a cold exaust system and once everything gets to running temp it will be clear.??

Yes, I thought that, although in one instance, I'd just done an hour of over 70 on the motorway, then was stuck for 30 mins going 2 miles. Bit worrying.

Thanks

Hi Tom

Yes I can see it can be a bit worrying but I still think its OK. ---But saying that its spewing stuff from the exaust

----is it clear water or oily.????

----are you loosing water and having to top up.????

----has the car been standing for a time .???

Hi, I think it's clear water, the longer I'm in a traffic jam the worse it gets. Not topped up water at all, maybe slip into neutral more when in a jam?

  • 4 weeks later...

Just a quick update, I checked the coolant and it was below the minimum line so did some research, spoke to the guy in Halfords (I know, maybe I should have gone to a jag garage) who assured me I was buying the right type. It looked the same colour as well.

Anyway I topped it up with about 1L and low and behold I've not seen any 'stuff' come out of the exhaust.

BUT!

Intermittantly now - on runs of over 20 mins - the dreaded 'Reduced Performance' message appears. the car doesn't seem to be running at a reduced performance but it's a bit worrying as I'm due to do a 250 mile run on Saturday.

Should I be worried?

Cheers

Service didn't sort it. passed MOT no problem, but it's getting worse! I get beeps and even a motorcyclist stopped next to me in traffic and said, "You've got a load of sh it coming out the back of your car mate."

Car runs fine but it's embarrassing, especially on school run when I'm polluting all the kids walking past.

Sorry to hear that its so bad ---You said you only had the XF for a month before this problem showed

it seems to me as though it was there when you bought it and I think the garage should put it right ????

Is it the the same Jaguar Garage you bought it from who checked it and that said it would cost £5000.???

If it is I think you demand that they put it right .

Im no lawyer and do not really understand but dont just let them fob you off here.

Terrible, Tom.  £5000 sounds like a new engine price.

Did the warranty you got when you bought the car not cover anything expensive?

Peter.

Hi Tom,

Frank has just said something I should have remembered.  I think the Sale of Goods act could come in here.  And we have a member who knows more than a bit about the Law.

You could send a PM to Kenny, a Moderator, and ask for his opinion.  I am sure his legal knowledge will come in useful.

Regards,

Peter.

Many Thanks for the replies. The injector cylinder no.4 is covered so that's something.

The other things: Cat Converter leaking gas, Diaphram split - intake manifold, Gearbox sump leaking.

Is it vital I get these other things done asap? or can I pick one off a month, would it be safe to drive?

Tricky situation, I didn't buy it from an official Jaguar garage, bought it from a very small dealership in north London. Not sure I have a leg to stand on as it was absolutely fine for 3k miles. Happy to go down legal route though if anyone thinks it's worth it. If I went down to place I bought it I'm sure they'd just laugh if I asked for my money back.

Hi if you wan to pick one off a month I would get the leaking sump done my s type r had a leaking sump and it leaked continously even when the car was not being used they have a plastic sump that distorts over time and begins to leak can cost up to £400 depending on car if your car is under 10 years old it might be worth taking some sort of warranty for the future

Cheers for reply.

So far so good, car running beautifully at the moment and no sign of the dreaded 'Restricted Performance'.

Think I'll just keep driving it for a few months and hope for the best. As has been pointed out before, Jag garages will try and pick up on the most minor thing to get the car in for repair.
