Fuel Consumption

Hi all,

 

Filled up last weekend... Have been doing various trips. Mostly round town at 30-40 MPH but some out of town... 50-60-70 MPH roads... Mainly steady away driving... I usually only put my foot down on the motorways. So only light driving.

 

I've done barely 200 miles.... 187.8 to be precise...

 

And I'm having to fill up! Fuel low light has come on.

 

Didnt realize the 3.,0 would be so thirsty!

Around 25mpg is the norm for a car with a 3.0 petrol engine that weighs nearly 2tonnes !!

Hi Chris,

 

Andy has hit the right figure.  The S Type is a big heavy car,  --  my 2.7 Diesel gets on the mid 40's mpg on a long run, but in town around 30 mpg.  My X type with the 2.5 litre petrol could get about  36mpg on a long run, but only 25mpg around town.

Most of my driving is around town with little urban, due to trafic lights, road works. trafic jams etc I am lucky if I get 15mph. But what a drive.

Very true Stan, it is one heck of a motor it turns heads and when I do put my foot down that roar from the engine at about 3000 to 5000 rpm... what a noise...

Hey all, noticed something really cool this morning, fuel needle dropped to hitting just about the red mark, was like that for a while. Then all of a sudden it went up to a quarter of a tank!

Just a thought, could your gauge / tank level censor be a bit dodgy?

 

From your comment about it giving you back a quarter of a tank, you may actually be topping it up, when you have plenty left. I dont know what the capacity is in the tank (should be quite easy to find out)

 

As an idea, next time the dreaded warning light comes on, fill her up and make a note of the litres you used. if you use the right amount, your gauge is probably correct (and therefore your Miles Per Tank 'MPT') if you put in less, when the petrol pump does that auto stop filling thingy that they do, then the chances are your gauge / tank level censor is at fault, and your MPT should improve, by quarter of a tanks worth of milage :D

I also have a 3.0, but my MPG is not going to improve, 23.9 MPG as i literally do the same journey more or less, week in, week out under the same traffic / speed / stop - start conditions.

Bless her, she never gets to go on a proper long journey :(

 

Anyhow like i said just a thought, those with more knowledge / experience than i will correct me if i'm wrong

I'm no expert, but I did 230miles with 50quid of V-Power and it was half motorway half urban and I have to admit I just can't be at a traffic light and not put the foot down on green! :D

hi chris  iam on my second jag now and currently own a 5ltr f-type awd coupe ,what a machine I have took on m3 m5 audis r8s c63s wanting a drag race in they last few weeks of ownership what a car even beat an lambo avatiour off he lights today the bmws m3&5 are !Removed!. 911s to, m63s and 5s crap it burns them all well done Jaguar what a fantastic car. that was the nut on the shell tonite the lambo guy was reving up reving up the jag half the price of his burned him big time, happy as :P

Most drivers compare fuel consumption not because of the price but rather to become aware of any problem which may exist.  I would become concerned if my humble S Type 2.7 Diesel started to show less than 40 mpg on a long run and start to look for the cause.

 

I know that if I get over 500 miles on a tankful on mostly long runs that the engine is running correctly, and I know that if I get less than 400 on a tankful on average driving conditions that something other than me is causing a problem.

 

I had a brand new Toyota Avensis in 1998 [company car] and the consumption on mostly longer runs was only around 30 mpg -- and that was with a 1.7 petrol engine.  It also handled like a lame camel.

Thanks for the info all, yes it is a brilliant car and I rejoice in the power and speed of the thing! 

 

Im not moaning about fuel per se, just making sure there isnt an under lying issue. Car is due MOT on the 27th and hopefully will sail though.

I hi there I find I get around 20 on petrol but had mine lpg converted when I bought her I'm averaging around 40/45 to the gallon and I use it every day for work really pleased with it

Decades ago, as a gauche youth in my open top sports car, I was amused by the way a tunnel amplified the noise of its exhaust, a few blasts on the loud pedal should impress the natives. Not so the old lady who gave me a whack around the head with her handbag, claiming that I’d “scared the life out of her”. At the time my passenger and I thought it was hilarious but she was right.

Importantly, I sold the car, partly because of fuel consumption, only to realise later in life that had I not burnt fuel in a manner that frightened old ladies (and thrilled the chancellor), I might still be the owner of a car the likes of which seem to fetch a fortune these days.

One of the things that appeals to me about the S Type is it’s serene progress in all conditions. I’ve accelerated hard up a mountain, computer showing 4mpg, and seen the descent at 99mpg! I’ve worried when stuck in a motorway traffic jam, low on fuel, knowing that 0mpg is all I’m getting, and guessing that if I ‘revved it up’ I’d probably be recording gallons per mile. Today my driving style is more chauffeur than Sébastien Loeb and, believe it or not, cruising quietly through a town, the car seems to attract more attention than any traffic-light boy racer.

My S Type is a 4.2 V8 and I’ve not re-set the computer for about 8,000 miles. This is a pic, taken today, of the average fuel consumption; 25.4 mpg, I’m more than happy.

We have a lot in common.  My motor bikes used to get fed on 100 Octane Fuel, and were suitably tuned to go like The chariot of Jehu --- verily like the wind.

 

Nowadays I like to drive gently, and, yes, the s type does turn heads even here in Brummagem where it was made.
