Rumble from the Rear?

Hi,  Im hearing a rumbling noise from i believe is the rear of the car. This morning i jacked up to see if i could locate and feel the rumble suspecting one of the hub bearings.

I lifted and removed both rear wheels and found that the hubs turn quite freely without any apparent grumble. I then turned to the front wheels and did the same, thinking i could be mistaken but nothing there either.

Any thoughts where i should look next?

Thanks Russ. I have spoken to a local guy who suggested that under load the bearings will behave differently. I am familiar with bearing hub issues (I also have a Land Rover discovery) and have found with that if you can hear a grumble in the disco cab you will feel it by hand turning the hub, so no question - replace. Here it seems more complex.

I will try check the Oil first in the diff this afternoon.

I am also looking to replace the wishbone bushes as we have some play (wishbones both sides complete with second hand parts from a low mileage car if they appear good enough) .

The Transmission bearings may be a bit of a bigger job to do so will start simple. Thanks for your advise.

Haha! There are a few of us here running both Discos and S-Types then! My comment was part based on Disco ownership, our TD5 was rumbling, whining, grinding and squeaking all over the place and I replaced transfer and gearbox Oil, along with thrust bearings and UJ's and eventually got her sorted. Obviously the 4WD is different to the RWD, but if it's not on the hubs, the transmission is the other option.

Good luck with that and let me know how you get on, I want to do (manual) gearbox and diff Oil soon as well. Replacing all the fluids is one of the few original tasks I set myself that I haven't done yet :wink1:

Thanks Russ.

Yes Im battling with doing several jobs on the Disco at the same time. Just had a chassis spruce up for the MOT that involved a few new bits and I have an abundance of other new parts like radiator/calipers/hubs  to put on it...but as you will know, owning two vehicles that need constant TLC...time becomes limited!

Will keep you posted.

I know exactly where you're coming from Stuart! I'm lucky in that I now have somewhere indoors to work on the cars when required, and the option of a relatively cheap local mechanic I trust if I don't fancy the work myself. These 2 things would've been unimaginably luxuries just a few years ago!

All the best :wink1:

Thanks Russ. Having an in-doors sure does make it easier. (can't get the disco in mine as it's is too tall even with the suspension lowered via the green button!)

and finding a mechanic that can do the bits that are a bit more of a challenge is another relief.

Cheers
