Wheel sizes on XF's with 3.0 litre engines fitted

Hi All,

         I wonder if anyone could enlighten me with any info with regards as to what the difference there would likely to be between the following XF's with regards to the Handling and Ride charactaristics.....They are Both produced and supplied by Jaguar.

         The XF Luxury fitted with the 3.0 litre V6 240 Turbocharged engine with 17" wheels (235/55 tyres) and the XF Premium Luxury 3.0 litre V6 (same Engine) fitted with 18" wheels (245/45 tyres). It appears that both of these XF's have Identical engines and Power Outputs, so apart from Wheel/Tyre Sizes what is the difference....can it be just the Ride and Handling qualities or is there something else ?

         I am asking this question as I have previously talked about the rough riding on certain types of roads (on this Forum) with my XF Premium Luxury fitted with 18" wheels (245/45 tyres). My Dealer has promised that when possible, they would let me try out my XF with a set of 17" wheels fitted (235/55 tyres).

        Up until now there has been no joy of this happening. I am therefore hoping that I may get some idea of what I may expect if, and when, these smaller wheels are fitted, as a test, onto my XF in order to see if there is any improvement in the Ride qualities.

with the smaller wheels they have a larger profile fitted so the rolling radius of the wheels/tyres will be pretty much the same.

However, what you will experience is the smoother (softer) ride quality with the larger diameter tyre.

It would be good for you to experience the difference (if it is that noticeable) so keep hassling your dealer !

I've just purchased a new 3 litre supercharged XF and specified 20" Kalimnos wheels, with 255/35/20 Dunlop tyres.

 

I had to leave the car with the dealer and used a new demonstrator with smaller wheels (19"?).

 

I could not notice any difference in ride quality, although the steering felt lighter on the demonstrator.

              thanks for your input with regards to my predicament. At last I have to report that I have had 17" wheels with 235/55 tyres fitted to my XF. I now experience (as you kindly pointed out) a "Softer" ride. Gone is the "Harsh" jolt when going over bad parts of road surface. However I now get some slight sideways movement when going over "White Lines etc" which I can tolerate. I still experience a slightly "Jiggely" ride at times but these items are well worth putting up with rather than the teeth rattling ride I experienced with the 18" wheels.....My Jaguar Dealer has offered to try to sell the set of 18 x 245/45 wheels on eBay for me. Incidently the XF had to be reprogrammed in order to adjust the Speedo etc.after fitting the 17" wheels....I contacted my Insurers who made a note on my file about the wheel change, but it did not alter the premium..............Many Thanks............Billyboy

Hi I am new!


 


I am really confused, I want to put 20" Kalimnos on my 2012 XF-S (275).  The dealer will sell me them, but they are over £2K or i can get them online for £1K.  I am just hearing conflicting stories about if they will fit. Obviously if the dealer fits them they must fit?!  


 


My Draco wheels are the same size all around, with 255/35/20 tyres.  All Kalimnos seem to come in a set with bigger back wheels, can I just put a bigger set on the back? I am reading conflicting information about off sets. Are the XKR Kalimnos exactly the same set as what would be for an XF?


 


All help very much appreciated.

The problem with offsets if the car isn't designed for them is that the diameter will differ slightly. This can cause traction and cruise systems to error if wide enough. I've heard of such issues simply by having worn tyres on one axle and new on the other.

I must say, I've the standard 20s (255/35/20) on mine and sure it's a firmer ride and it wouldn't suit my dad but I find the ride surprisingly soft and comfortable. You can feel the grip and the road ( there's no mistaking that this is the sports model) but it's nowhere near as intrusive as I expected, even on rough roads. In fact the ride is much better than my previous E270 merc with 245/45/17s
