Off to buy an X-type

Based in Sutton Coldfield  West Midlands  Currently own 4 mercedes of which the wifes 1997 C240  whilst still mechanically fit for another 60K+ ( 135K at moment )  it is now a bit tatty round the wheelarches and  has a large rust bubble round the bootlid lock ( common on these )  It has been stalwart over the 10 years of ownership  but it is aesthetically time to move on,  we both liked the old style XJ's and she has hankered after an x type after seeing an aquaintances  about 6months ago . I would dearly love to be able to persuade her to get an X350  V6  as they seem good reliability wise as  i do have concerns about the X-type in terms of the transfer box and the auto  but she says too big  so there we are , I should add  I'm afraid it has to be auto  and  it has to be petrol , and cream / or beige leather ( and to narrow it down even further red or light metallic blue ;-)  ) so we are looking at  2004-2007 cars today In the end she deserves to have what she wants life's too short ,  and its a retirement treat  ( live now! )  and as said she deserves to have what she wants ,so  here's hoping  we find a good one and it can live up to its predecessor .

I shall be checking

D & R selection on cold start

Transfer box whine

Front Pulley Rumble

Central locking

Boot Lock

Aircon

Inner Tyre wear

Suspension Knocks

and probably plug it in to a diagnostic reader

and the rest of the usual stuff but the above is what i glean to be X type weaknesses

favourite at moment is a 70k 2.5   or a  62k  3.0

520 Tax band (unless its a pre march 06  2.5 ) bit of a Bu**er but if it has to be petrol just have to swallow it extra 1k over 5 years not the end of the world

Good luck and happy looking, thence (hopefully) happy Growling.    Don't have any experience of the X but you seem to have most bases covered.  We are both more than happy with our XK X150 and S, would like to add a X350 to the stable, but, at the moment, the stable isn't big enough.  Drat!

Have a great time looking and, as always, happy Growling

Carole & partner

Hi

One of the most important check you have missed is sills, they can suffer with severe corrosion on the sills, year unrelated effects early ones and also late ones, so is a must to check, the sills can completely rot away, but still pass a mot, as they are covered will a plastic cover,

cheers

Joe

Welcome to the Club, James.

I had a 2.5 litre V6 x type AWD on a 2005 plate and found it a very nice car indeed.  It was in a metallic red and looked really spectacular in the sun.

Good luck on your search,

I am also from Sutton Coldfield;

My X type, and my current S Type.

Regards,

Peter,

Hi again

With regard to an independent for service etc...........we travelled from our base just west of Birmingham, to Elite Performance & Jaguar at Derby.......not too much of a trip, but well worthwhile.  We took our XK X150 for its annual (on time) service and were well impressed.  We got a very thorough interpretation of our "baby" and a reasonable bill as well, everything done just right.   Guess where our S-type is going when she becomes due for attention?!    Main contact initially is the boss - John.

Happy growling, as always. Start practicing the Jaguar grin!

Hi James,

I have found that main dealers are, in the main, quite  expensive for maintenance.  I have used the same local mobile mechanic [Rover trained] since 2002.  He has all the diagnostic equipment, and has never failed me in all those years.  He collects my car [fully insured to do so] and takes it away to so the work necessary, and does not overcharge.  He will do smaller jobs [replacing an exhaust etc] on you driveway. He is based in Erdington.  Contact me if you want his 'phone number.

Regards,

Peter.
