THE generic "Supermarket Petrol" , what is the truth.

Back in the "Dark Ages", when I was younger (now almost 72 years young) and was running Nissan 200`s and Skylines etc., we used to avoid Supermarket Petrol like the plague. It was never suitable or desired for higher performance cars. They just would not run correctly on it and there was always fear of detonation and damage it could/would do.

Now running a car I have admired and desired for many years, S Type 2.5 V6, I have returned to the subject of Supermarket Petrol and whether I should use it or not. So where are we these days please. I am absolutely certain this will cause some debate and that there are members of this Forum that will have the knowledge and information to be able to discuss/advise on the subject at its current status. Currently I do not use Supermarket Petrol, based on old bias opinion.

Is today`s Supermarket Petrol good enough, fit enough, advanced enough, clean enough etc., etc, to be used in my beloved S Type?

Looking forward to replies and discussion on the subject.

(P.S.  I am still waiting for some replies and advice on my submitted topic concerning Engine Code P0420 and unable to find corrective route. (in this Section, thanks)).

If you've got time, swap the catalyst sensors over between exhausts. If the fault changes side it's the sensor. If it stays it's the catalyst.

New (upstream and downstream) Lambda`s have already been fitted to Bank 1, where the fault code is recording.

Hi, John.

I have been advised by good mechanics to use the best quality fuel.

So I have used Shell V Power after having my S type for less than a year.  I am 87 now and it has taken much of my pension!

Hi John 

I use supermarket petrol in my 2005 XJ and my 2001XK. Touch wood I haven't had any problems but it's too early to say what they will think of the E10. On the other hand my 1952 AJS was running like a bag of hammers and sounded like the big end was knocking. After much investigation I was advised to use decent petrol and an additive which I used anyway and it was like a different bike. I wonder how the old AJ would take to E10.😕.

Hi John,

My s type has a Diesel engine and I think  diesel in a supermarket does not meet with the correct fuel for a Jaguar.

However, a Jaguar with a petrol engine can use any reasonable petrol.

I feel I will be happier keeping to NOT using Supermarket Fuel.

I like the comment about pensioners using all of their income running S Types. I certainly concur with that one.

Well, I know for a fact because the companies delivery driver told me, 

“@@@@“ “@@@@@“ in Stockport, collect contaminated fuel from the AA and RAC fuel contamination sites

(All collected from missfuelled vehicles)

in a tanker, this mix of petrol and diesel gets chemically washed and left to seperate back into petrol / diesel before he mixed it 50:50 with new clean fuel then sells it to small independent garages at a reduced rate. the delivery driver tells me that the petrol is ok but the diesel is a weird cloudy colour and isn’t 100% true clean fuel, which is why I use a high grade fuel from a well known stations for all my fuel
