1 pointHi Graham, I've had the 4.2 for about a year and a half now and I think the best way to describe it is "effortless". I absolutely adore mine, around town it's shocking on fuel but I live in the country and it averages 28 to the gallon, on a run to Leeds it did 35 so not too shabby. Performance is definitely there if you want it, or it does a lovely line in waft if not. Hope that helps,1 point

1 pointSounds like you've made your mind Graham, you're talking yourself round to a late model S Type, can't say I blame you. Mines an 2003 model and it drives like new, I'm well impressed with it. No disregard to the X Type, I've had 2 of them, but the S Type finish and ride just feels like a step up.1 point
