Hi Steve, In the past I have found that tyre wall cleaner is good on the plastic parts, and for the other parts I have used ordinary multi surface kitchen clean which used sparingly on a sponge will cut through the grease. Heavy grease and oily bits either Gunk or Jizer. For the black plastic bits on the exterior trim I use black boot polish. Peter.

Hi Dave, You appear to have Burr Walnut wood trim in your car instead of Maple, which [[excluding Sport Models] is the standard trim. It is usual in the XJ and versions with the Daimler badging. Regards, Peter.

Hi Dave, Goodyear Tyres are now made in Germany and the Euro exchange rate favours the £ at the moment makes them quite cheap. When I got my tyres the euro was 1.29 to the £ and now is 1.38. A good bargain. Let us know how good you think they are. Peter.

Hi Andy, I have had the odd surge forward, and it is usually an indication in my car [2.7D]that ] the EGR valves are getting sticky. A good blast on the motorway usually does it. my neighbour has a Mercedes 1.8D and also sometimes experiences the same. Petrol engines could be different Peter.

Hi Dave, Try the Halfords site. Just look for "Tyres" put in you reg number and it will come up with the right tyre for your car. The exact tyre I went for is:- Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 FP XL 245/40 R18 97 Y. I get a good deal at Halfords locally as they will always give a lower price than the other local tyre companies -- we have a Kwik Fit, and Formula 1 and a couple of other tyre companies not far away. Hi Dave, I use premium diesel as well Dave. The 2.7 diesel engine is a performance engine and deserves the best fuel. The West Midlands meet on Saturday had 8 S types all together -- they looked great. Peter.

Hi Dave, The tyre size for 18" wheels should be on the s type 2.7D 245/40R/18/97Y. As given by Jaguar. There was a recent try survey and the two makes that came out on top were Goodyear Eagle XL and Vredestein. I hav just replaced my front tyres with Goodyear and am surprised at how quiet they are. Hi Tony, I agree with Paul. Walk away. My son bought a Mondeo Estate from a guy on ebay in Bristol, and I took him down to collect it. When he got it home he found that the air conditioning did not work and the repair was very expensive. Add to that the engine waring light came on and £250 paid to correct it. It passed the MOT OK but a few months later he rang me up and asked if I could tow him home as he had broken down100 yards from home. A bit of research later, and my mobile mechanic found that there was a vital engine part of inferior quality which Ford knew about but never recalled the model. Replacement Engine £1600. The right car will come along.

Thank you all for the comments. Paul and I are so pleased that those that came, especially those from a fair distance away, enjoyed the event. I did say in July that the weather was going to be good, and I kept a lot of fingers crossed that it would be. Phillip is to be thanked for bringing the XE rather than his beloved S Type, which enabled all of us to see a car which is going to play a big part in the UK auto industry. It is open to any member to organise and even in any location. It was a first time for Paul and myself, and Paul and I are thinking of a future one. I hope those attending enjoyed the little booklet which nearly didn't happen as my printer had a big hiccup which luckily I managed to cure with assistance from Curry's, and Friday was quite a busy day. I didn't think of that! I wonder if the MOT came before the warning light came on, or that the "new" MOT is not that new. Is it possible to see the car before bidding? Peter.

Hi Tony and welcome to the club. The S type is a great car, but like most modern cars does need a big battery. Some owners of older S types have found some rust under the plastic sill covers, but if it has a fresh MOT they should be in reasonable condition. It seems that ABS sensors generating a fault is not unusual, and there will be plenty of members who have experienced that. The main point now to look for is the service history and if the bodywork is nice and straight, and the paintwork is good. Let us know how you get on. Regards Peter.

Without being political, people spending money gets the economy going in the right direction and if people are unemployed they have less money to spend. I was just a simple steelworker, but I note that the price of steel has come down from £433 an ton to £195 due to the Chinese flooding the market.

Oils are getting complicated, Joe, as are engines. I think that the eventual idea from the manufacturers is that they sell you a car, and when it breaks down, they exchange it for another. All you will have to do is give them some more cash. My Canon Printer which I bought 15 months ago is now obsolete. It had an error code, and I took it in to Currys, and as I had taken out repair or replacement warranty, they offered to replace it. The problem was that they did not have a similar model to replace it with. They will have one somewhere that I can get, but odds on it will be £60 dearer than mine was. Peter.
