Hi Paul, There is a site called fixya. Don't get onto it by googling it directly, but just google jaguar 2.7 diesel - changing glow plugs and you can get to that site and get an answer without having to pay for it. It details the procedure you will have to follow, and being experienced in these matters I think you will find it easy enough. Let us know if you find that site OK. Regards, Peter.

Hi Barry, I had Company cars for 30 years and soon got used to getting someone to sorting the problems out, although I did become expert with the Ford Escort --- 11 of them! I learnt how to cure the road noise by turning up the radio. Since I retired almost 15 years ago looking after the car has been a priority and although I have a very good mechanic to do the servicing, small jobs are done on the drive. After a Rover Sterling from 8 months old till it was 12 the only car [living in Birmingham and always having British cars] had to be a Jaguar, and I must say I am enjoying it. First a 2.5 litre all wheel drive x type, and now a very nice s type 2.7 Litre diesel which goes like the Chariot of Jehu -- " verily like the wind." Be fussy -- the prerogative of age! A faulty sensor, Mark. They are not expensive but finding out which one will need a Code Scanner or a Jaguar dealer which will be more expensive than the sensor. I had the same problem with my X Type, also a 2005 model. If you know a good mechanic he will probably have a code scanner, or you can borrow mine if you wish and if you feel you can do the job yourself. Regards, Peter.

It is a big oversight, Trevor. My X Type had a mechanical latch as well as an electric boot opener. My S Type has two electric methods of opening the boot plus two mechanical ones. So I conclude that it is either a design oversight or a cost cutting exercise. I have heard of a little gadget that you charge up occasionally that you can plug into the Power Source which boosts up you battery if it's getting flat. While I have only had one puncture in the last 13 years, I hated the emergency spare wheel in my x type, and was intending to buy a matching alloy wheel [still got the tyre for it in the garage] when the car was stolen. My s type has a proper wheel on a matching alloy rim in the boot. Regards, Peter.

Hi Trevor, I have had a bit of a look around without learning anything new, but I did check with a friend who knows something about Jaguar [he lives in Castle Vale] and he tells me that Jaguar were thinking of a recall to retro fit some kind of under bonnet charging system that a booster could be connected to when the battery failed. Come to think of it, the fuel filler cap also seems to have no mechanical means of opening either. I had a Rover Sterling for 11 years and that had a manual boot release, but also a small pull wire inside the boot for opening the filler cap. The battery on the S Type is in the boot, but there is a very clever hidden keyhole for emergencies. Regards Peter.

Welcome to the Club, Barry. There are some curious issues with the tailgate, which, never having had an estate car of any kind, I would not even try a guess at. In respect of the tyre noise, some tyres are noisier than others and tyre pressure can have a bearing. I had an X Type saloon [2.5 petrol] running on Pirellis and it was very quiet. I have just had a look on the Jaguar official website and they mention a button to open the boot on the right hand side of the bumper. Is there someone at Castle Vale who has forgot to put it on yours? Getting curiouser! Peter.

I saw a You Tube video of a chap opening the boot of an XJ by pressing a button to the right of the boot --- 2011 model. It looked so easy --- but they must have changed it! Peter.

Is there not a cleverly disguised keyhole underneath the overhang on the boot lid, Trevor? I thought Jaguar would not copy Mercedes. Peter.

I was told that when a battery is on its way out the minor functions it performs will start to fail first. I don't know whether that is true or not, but it is worth thinking about. Peter.

A very handy tool indeed, Trevor. I got mine off e-Bay. Just type in Universal code scanner. There will be a choice of gadgets, but the one I bought is D900/2013. On the S Type it plugs in on the driver's side to the left under the dash. On the XJ I think the best bet would be to google for the location, [which is what I did] but I would guess it would not be very different. It was easy to find. Regards, Peter

Yes Stan. reading the dashboard message is easy, but knowing what it is can cost you money. The main dealers make a fortune, and for under £30 you can reduce what you pay them. Cheers, Peter.

Welcome to the Club, Kev. There are not many people from God's County on here! What you will need is a Code Reader to find out the code for the problem, or a friendly mechanic who has one. That will come up with a Code and you can get the list of codes on here. A main dealer will charge about £70 to tell you what the problem is, and a lot more to fix it. E-Bay have them on their site for under £30. Hope you can get it solved. Regards, Peter.

Hi Mark, If you do intend to do some high speed driving [over 100 mph] the tyre pressure has to be higher. The number of speed cameras in Staffordshire makes speeding a bit expensive, though! Peter.
