Dose anyone know if it is possible to retro fit a heated front screen ie is the wiring already there or not or is it not possible

Good one! got to say, would think not, new screen maybe? so wait to see replys

Hi Gordon,

My windscreen had a severe crack and gad to be replaced.  The original one was a heated one and it was replaced by a similar one.

The conclusion is that it can be done.. It will probably be expensive though, unless you have the misfortune of a large stone from a lorry hitting you.

Regards

Peter.

Thats what I was thinking Peter if the standard one got broken and I paid extra for a heated one how much of job would it be to get it wired in

Hi

I think its all controlled off the climate control module

then there a few relays, the button on the dash and of course windscreen

but i would of thought you would have to program it as fitted in ids/sdd

Sounds a bit beyond me I think

I think you'll also need the touchscreen with the heated front window switch as well Gordon.

I'm all for retrofitting and I'll never say never. Please let me know when you've done it

Hi Gordy,

You have seen some very useful answers.

My car already had the heated front screen fitted prior to it getting damaged quite badly, and so it had all the wiring and switch already there. But  having watched the windscreen fitter from Autoglass do the job I would not attempt to do such a job myself. Apart from the weight of the screen, it did look like a very complicated exercise.

I would not recommend, though, following a lorry through roadworks!

Its not going to happen Paul I'am ok with mechanics but electrics are not my thing

  • 1 month later...

Having now been given access to a suitable touchscreen and climate control module and seeing that the loom is pre- fitted at the windscreen, I'm now seriously considering this retrofit

Hello.

I realise this is reviving an old thread, but did anyone ever retrofit a heated front screen?

I naively thought all S types had them as my year 2001 did but the replacement 2008my doesn’t have one sadly.

Regards Chris.

I'm satisfied that it can be done Chris. It was the next project on my previous car. However, events overtook and my replacement S-Type already has it fitted.

Hi Chris,

Paul is quite correct.  When my heated windscreen had to be replaced after a large crack the fitter who came with the new one told me that the electrics were the same in cars without it.

Peter.

Hello.

Thank you for the replies.

I haven’t had chance to look yet but from what you say can I assume that the relevant wiring will all be in place?

Apart from obviously a new screen then, I will just need th correct relays, fuses and a sat nav screen with the switch fitted?

Regards Chris.

Hi again.

I had a good look in the under bonnet fuse box today and it appears that both the relays and fuses are present for a heated screen!

Therecis 40 amp fuse in locations 25 and 30 and two grey relays in locations  R20 and R21.

My car is a 2008 MY, does this sound right? Could it really be that “all” I need is a sat nav unit with the correct buttons and a screen??

Regards Chris.

Another point of view; I'm not an advocate for heated screens. A recent eye test revealed that my distance vision is close to perfect but I do use reading glasses. Whether this combination exacerbates the problem I experience with the heated screen on my car I don't know, but in various lighting circumstances I am very conscious of the fine wires in the screen and find it quite distracting. If my screen were to be damaged I'd probably ask for a non-heated replacement - if that could be done?

So I am not the only one that finds the heating elements intrusive , if I need to replace I think I too would go non heated,in three years I have yet to use it.

I now have a new heated front screen and there are now no visible heating elements ,all the elements are across the bottom of the screen, the change was I am told due to customer pressure. Bliss is a clear wind screen.

Hello again.

I still plan to retrofit a heated screen, especially as my standard one needs replacing now due to a stone!

Out of curiosity, what make is your new screen?

Thanks, Chris.

Fitted by National Windscreen , I have no idea of make , sorry.
