Turbo/EGR valve

Hi everyone,

Driving an 08 plate X-type 2.2d auto (116500 miles) which has now on three occasions displayed a flashing amber warning light with 'gearbox fault' and gone into 3rd gear/limp home mode. These occasions have been spread over a 2/3 month period and drive with no problems whatsoever at all in-between.

Over Christmas the car was parked up in the cold for a couple of weeks so the battery also failed, so replaced it a few weeks ago anyway, and thought this might be the root of the gearbox problem - but two weeks ago same gearbox fault again. All I do is pull over, turn the car off and on again and its then totally fine. Drives sweet as you like, no problems at all.

Obviously if recurring problem, or risking potential damage to elsewhere in the engine, I want to get it sorted.

Quick chat with the local independent jag man and he thought probably Turbo or EGR valve needing replacing - which sounds plausible...

But he wants to charge me £65 plus vat for a code readout, and then ballparked £350 for a new turbo, plus 3 hours labour, all with the dreaded Vat.

Anyone else had/come across issues of this nature? - Is it urgent/am I causing damage to the car driving it until fixed? And can anyone advise if this sort of ballpark price checks out? The jag dealer have serviced the car for me, do excellent work and have many faithful customers, but this the first major repair I've had on this car so keen to hear if the price sounds reasonable.

Thanks for any tips in advance.

Cheers,

Liam

Hi Liam,

I have never had this problem, but I think that £65 + VAT for a diagnostic readout is a bit steep.  The price for a new turbo  that he has quoted is within the price range and I guess that it would take three hours.  At the same time, and before you have the job done, I would check what the labour charge would be, as I feel that if the diagnostic readout was £65, then the hourly rate could well be £130 an hour.

If that is so, the total price would be circa £900.  I would try to negotiate on the hourly rate, if you need him to do the job.

You could have a look at the turbocharger specialists who supply and fit turbochargers to see what their price would be for supplying and fitting one, and `if could be worth  the fuel cost to take your car to them,

On the bright side, there is only one turbocharger   --  there are two on the s type 2.7D

Regards,

Peter.

Thanks so much Peter.

Yes doing the maths it doesn't look pretty... Their diary is well booked up so my guess is negotiating might be tricky - people obviously have confidence in their work and use them regularly, which of course does count for a lot. But I will have a look around...

Any other thoughts from other members most welcome. Thanks.

Electronic Turbo Actuator for Jaguar X Type.   look this up on eBay and read what it says.   it may help ?   giving you more understanding of what it may be. !   as you may not need a new turbo, because usually when a turbo goes it smokes like a chimney,  then take the car to someone who specialise in auto gearboxes, they should also know what the cause is due to gearbox fault.
