Has anyone converted the boot lid in an XF to enable it to open fully and not just a few inches

Gary,

I have a 2013 V6 Luxury Premium XF and I had the same issue, fitted a couple of the hydraulic dampers and now unless cold the boot lid flies open. Cost me less than £30 and 5 mins to change.

I too used replkacement hydraulic lifters which I specified to be, IIRC, 25N greater than standard.

They worked perfectly but I became concerned that the final flip of the boot lid might not be good for the metalwork and replaced them with original lifters.

If all the joints and hinges are suitably lubricated, even standard lifters can raise the boot lid fully.

There is a video on Youtube which demonstrates a method of achieving the same goal by usinig a screw on each side of the mechanism to modify the geometry.. I suspect this may well reduce the capabilities of the pedestrian protection system and is not something I'd use myself.

Is this not a safety feature so it does not open fully if it accidentally opens whilst on the road?

Mine opens all the way if released remotely but only a bit if using the manual release on the boot

I am perfectly happy that mine only opens slightly, I cannot think of a scenario where I would wish it to open fully every time.

In my case, always having one hand encumbered with my walking stick, itcan be a real assistance 🙂

Mine just 'releases', lifting by about 1cm, regardless of whether I use the remote or the internal button. Didn't seem to be a problem and hadn't given it any thought until I saw this thread.

Now have 'boot lid jealousy'!

Cheers,
Jon

Ha ha so does mine at the moment Jon

boot lid jealousy, brilliant 😂

  • 1 year later...

I replaced the hydraulic as well as fitting and extra bolt inside the mechanism.  It worked prefect for a few months then went back to as it did. As mentioned in a further comment not sure if it's got cold now. The only thing I don't like is it tended to "bounce" when fully open, wondered in time if it would damage the mechanism. So up to you if you really want it. I purchased all the items off a well known site with Bay as the end word.
