hello.

i have a 2002 s type..couple of weeks ago auto gearbox wouldn't allow me to shift from park when engine had been running for a while whilst parked..switching off engine and restarting cured it but happened 3 more times..no warning lights...2 days ago gearbox wouldn't change up out of 1st gear just revs high..no warning lights..weirdly headlight began flashing when not switched on.

brakes lights remained on even when key out of ignition and drained battery...i have battery on charge in situ and brake lights are on....i know poor battery can cause all sorts of issues.

so...could it be...gearbox..poor battery..faulty brake switch ?

booked into garage but cant fit me in til 10 days.

thanks.

Have you read the codes via the OBD 11 plug to see if and/or what is listed?

That sounds like a ground point problem or battery related. Always check your basics first before you think of spending any money.

hi

never seen a low battery cause items to stay on

but worth putting the battery on charge over night

also worth checking the front and rear body modules are dry, especially one in boot, as they can suffer with water getting in the boot area, and damp will cause all sorts of problems. also any damp in the car, check front and rear foot wells are dry.

the shifting from park, could be a switch or relay, but also again low battery, when you sit in the car, with foot brake pressed, if you move the gear stick to the left, you can usually here a click, relay, down by the right side of the dash, there a micro switch on the gear stick, which is prone to failing in something is spilt on it, like pop, goes very sticky when it dries.

cheers

Thanks Joe.

Put battery on charge in situ and brake lights are permanently on during charge which leads me to think brake switch...ordered new battery anyway as got a good deal online...there is water underneath battery holder..no idea where that is coming in.

Water probably getting in through rear light gasket, known problem.  I have a leak on mine only found it after the rain on the last few weeks when I went under the boot floor..

I wonder if that's causing battery issues...nothing much I can do until new battery arrives.

cleaned out the boot..water seems to be coming through under the battery...will check again after next rainfall.....whilst there i thought i'd check brake switch fuse...how the hell is a 6'4'' guy supposed to get access to the footwell fuse box lol....whoever designed that should spend rest of his life going round all jag owners to replace any fuse.

That`s Jaguar !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . You had best write to Mr. Ian Callum about his design work.

Cheers, John
