I have a 1990 XJ6    4litre motor.   Some times you can be driving and it just  shuts down,as if it is not getting fuel.

Have checked  filter ,thats ok .   You have to sit for 5 or 10 mins  to get it started again.  It is not over heating. It    starts but will only rev to 600 rpm then dies,  leave it a bit longer and try again and it starts.

First thing i would check is the fuse for the fuel pump. Often these will get dirty on the contact ends over time and while appearing intact (not blown) they will give the same symptoms as a blown fuse. Removing the fuse and cleaning the contacts (or renewing the fuse with a NEW one) with some emery cloth (NOT sandpaper!) may well solve your problems.

Let us know how it goes!

hi

ideally you need to check that the fuel pump is still running when it cuts out

you need to find the pump and when it stops confirms its running , if not, check voltage at the pump, if theres no voltage, check as above, check all connections, fuses, relays,

have a look here for manuals and wiring diagrams http://www.jagrepair.com/

cheers

Joe

Check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve at the fuel rail, should be in the region of 55psi. Next time it happens, disconnect the MAF sensor, if it then starts straight away then there is your problem.
