  1. Some good information there but yes, I need to think carefully, my wife retires in a couple of years so I don't want to go too mad. The car only has just over 50k on it with a clean history, and I only do around 5k a year so I should get years out of it. I pick it up on Wednesday or thereabouts, but I'm not sure what the actual colour is. The dealer described it as Panther Black metallic, but I couldn't find it on any official colour chart. It looks more glossy than metallic: The main reason I was asking is there seemed to be quite a few swirl marks in the paint which showed up in the showroom lights. I suspect the last owner used a drive through car wash to clean it.
  2. That's what I meant John. Doesn't bother me either way, I was just curious as people seem to have differing opinions with others saying it's for extra engine cooling. I don't get my car until Wednesday or so, and I'm thinking of changing the vent panels on mine as they're all black, with only the Jag logo in silver. Because the car is black they're hardly noticeable, which seems a shame as they really set the car off IMO, so I may swap them for silver/chrome to make them stand out.
  3. i.e. the vent cover on the side behind the front wheel. I'm only asking because I've seen two different answers, one which says they are and one which says they're not and are only for show.
  4. I know this is a very, very old topic but as I've just bought a 2009 XF in black, I enquired about getting it ceramic coated. During the course of the conversation I was told that certain cars now use water based paint (including Jags) and the main drawback is that this is a lot softer than the older type of paint. The ceramic coating is sounding like a decent proposition. Would cost around £500 including prep, he said black or very dark colours are always the worst at showing up every flaw (his actual words were "I'll never understand why people buy black cars, they're a nightmare"). Hard for me to judge as my last car was metallic gold, and though it's faded a bit it was still in really good condition on my 19 y.o. Volvo and seems very strong. I've never had a dark colour for at least 30 years, and I'm beginning to regret it already and I haven't even picked the car up yet!
  5. We had a VW transporter van for our business years ago, and we had a similar problem. We went to several garages including 3 main dealers over 7 months trying to fix it. Almost all of them tinkered with the timing, to the point that it was so far out of place we couldn't get it to run at all in the end. Then a mate of mine decided to take the fuel tank off. In there we found a tiny piece of foil, we think the inner part of a cap seal from Redex or something like that, that every so often would be sucked up to the pipe at the end of the fuel tank, get stuck there. stop the fuel flow ands cut out the engine. Of course, once the engine stopped and the pump stopped trying to suck fuel through, the bit of foil would drop down to the bottom of the tank and (apart from the fact that by now the timing was screwed) it ran fine again. So what should have been a 20 minute, more or less free fix had cost us over £2k and we never got it running right again after that. So - what I'm saying is it definitely sounds like a blockage, possibly something the filter is picking up that's loose in the system, than then floats away again when the engine stops and it settles down. It could be something different of course, but your symptoms are identical to the letter to what was happening to our VW.
  6. I've just bought one in black. I pick it up next week. The spiel said metallic black and if I remember correctly the log book called it Panther Black (not Sapphire Black as i stated earlier) but it didn't look very metallic to me although this was inside in what looked like was a former old warehouse, with very high strip lighting, so hard to tell, especially with a lot of other cars crammed in around it. Somebody recommended ceramic coating to me, don't know if that's anything anyone here is familiar with? I'm told it would cost around £500 including prep, and lasts for 3 years minimum. I'm in Blackpool so we get lots of salt air, mini sandstorms overnight and lots of seagull crap.
  7. Thanks, yes that's correct. I scrapped the idea of buying that one after doing further research. It had failed almost every MOT since 2013, mostly due to tyre wear and damage, but this was the fail sheet from 2019: Repair immediately (major defects): Exhaust emissions exceed default limit of 1.5m-1 (8.2.2.2 (b)) Rear fog lamp not working (4.5.1 (a) (ii)) Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories): Nearside Front Tyre slightly damaged Side wall (5.2.3 (d) (ii)) Offside Front Tyre slightly damaged (5.2.3 (d) (ii)) Nearside Rear Tyre slightly damaged (5.2.3 (d) (ii)) Offside Rear Tyre slightly damaged (5.2.3 (d) (ii)) Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened Front brake discs slightly lipped and coroded (1.1.14 (a) (ii)) Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened Rear brake discs coroded (1.1.14 (a) (ii)) Oil leak, but not excessive engine (8.4.1 (a) (i)) So to me it doesn't look as though it's been looked after very well. I called to tell them I wouldn't be coming to look at it after all, but then was told it had sold the day before so thanks for letting me know, Mr. Dealer. A neighbour then recommended a place he's bought 3 cars from so far and I got an '09 model on sale for £8k with 50,000 miles on the clock, also in black (says metallic, it didn't look metallic but hadn't been cleaned and was inside like an old warehouse site). I wasn't expecting to buy yesterday but they had three in, in my price range. In total including the pittance they gave me for my old Volvo (£100 - though I'd seen that coming and used it in the negotiations), I paid £7250. 3.0d V6 Prem Exec (240BHP), looks tidy enough, FSH and only had an advisory for worn discs all round on the last MOT so I got them to agree to do the discs and brakes all round, the water pump which had signs of an old leak, and the cambelt. I also got the warranty upped from 3 months to 6 months. I'm happy with the deal. Any car can be a gamble but this looks as though it's been looked after, HPI checked and all that, has everything I want and with relatively low mileage for the price. I'll get it when the work has been done in a week or so, so I'll post a pic then. First Jag so I'm really looking forward to it. BY the way, for those who don't know (I didn't until a few days ago) you can now check the full MOT history of a car (back to 2003 I think) with dates of passes, fails and mileage, and it even tells you what the car has failed on and what the advisories are (which would generally mean money needs spending at some point in the near future) - VERY useful if you're changing your car and negotiating a deal. Check the MOT history of a vehicle - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
  8. Very useful, thank you. Most the ones on sale circa 2010 seem to be the Prem Lux models. Most have everything I want though, other than a sunroof which would have been nice but I believe they can let a lot of dust in, and the electric rear blind which I'm hoping will be a retro fit option as we carry a small dog in the back so will be useful. I've got an appointment to look at one this morning but it's had a good few MOT fails, mostly for tyre issues, an advisory for an oil leak and worn brake discs in 2020 so I'll need to know they were sorted. Also has a first MOT with a higher figure than subsequent ones, the speil says it was recorded in km rather than miles. All by a London main dealer, seems an odd mistake for a main dealer to make unless the dash display was set to kilos but otherwise it looks tidy: Used Jaguar Xf Saloon 3.0 Td V6 Premium Luxury 4dr in Bolton, Lancashire | J M Car Sales Limited (jmcarsalesltd.co.uk)
  9. Just a thought, but has nobody thought of taking Jaguar to the small claims court over this? Its relatively affordable and it can all be done online now. The company would have to turn up in court with a team of lawyers to defend the case and in most cases wouldn't even bother if its a small amount because it would be more time, tricks and expense than it's worth fighting the claim. With the information on this forum, which includes an admission from Jaguar I noticed early on in the thread, its the sort of thing that when presented with an invoice and the threat of a court claim they would probably pay up on "as a courtesy", especially if you hint that you're going to post it on social media. For those of you with legal cover on your insurance, try talking to them, it might help you to get your money back or get the job done for nothing by Jaguar. Incidentally, Jagmanz also posted this fix above, but nobody seems to have taken any notice of it: "It’s in the owners hand book, no diagnostic tool required. Manually unlock all the doors inside the car, remove the emergency lock cover on the outside passenger front door handle, using the emergency key blade from inside the key fob turn and hold the lock to the unlock position and press and hold the unlock button on the fob and it should re-synchronise the key fob to the car." I only mention this again because I was talking to somebody earlier today about this, and basically all that happens is that the locking system needs resetting after a battery disconnection. The guy I spoke to had the same problem and fixed his simply by resetting the system, exactly in the way Jagmanz describes above. You might have all being paying out large sums of money for nothing. I'm damned if I would have paid a penny if the system had been working fine when I took it in.
  10. That's great advice, thanks. I'm hoping to go look at one tomorrow if it's still there, looks OK from the pics, 78k which should be nothing for a 3L diesel.
  11. What would you call "high mileage"? As a used buy they look like a lot of car for the money I have to say. Also, I'm slightly confused over the model range. Some videos say the Portfolio is the top model, others say the Premium Luxury.
  12. pre-2011? I was thinking that any issues would have been ironed out in the post-2011 model, other than that I'm not really sure what the differences are, they both look the same to me apart from the difference bonnet shape around the headlights, though I've not had a good look yet. Does anyone know if folding rear seats and folding mirrors (electric) come as standard? First because I often have to rescue the missus and her bike when she has a puncture, and with the front wheel off it will (just) go in the boot of my S60 with the seats down, and the latter because I live on a narrow lane and don't have a driveway. If not I'll have to look for one with both fitted. Sometimes think I must be mad, I'm driving a 19 year old Volvo S60 T5 (2.4 turbo petrol) 102k miles, had it 9 years and never had a problem except for tyres, brakes and new exhaust back box last month - although the air con's currently not working and I had it re-gassed 6 months ago at the last service. But I've always wanted a Jag and this looks like a great opportunity to get a top car at decent money. No point spending a fortune as I do under 5k a year. Just a little concerned about potential issues giving that I'm getting rid of a car with relatively few. <<< Should read "No Jaguar yet!"
  13. Try searching Youtube. I could be wrong but when I was looking for info on the XF a few weeks ago I'm sure I saw a video called something like "Apple Play/Android Auto upgrade" for either the XE or XF.
  14. Got so many questions I don't know where to start so I'm reading up to try to find as many answers as I can, but the overriding one is should I buy a used, high mileage (i.e. 80-100k miles) XF? Although I'm not a diesel fan, I guess the V6 3L is the sensible one to go for, and I know they're a lot more refined these days but is a high mileage one going to be all rattly and horrible? And do I go for a newer (post 2011?) one with higher mileage or say an older 2008-09 one which slightly less miles on it? I see you can pick them up for around £6-8k with around 80,000m on the clock. What do I need to look out for apart from a good service history? I've got a budget of £9-£10k but like to keep something back in case any repairs/replacements are needed as I would only expect a relatively short warranty from a dealer, and my wife retires in a couple of years so I don't want to go too mad (otherwise it would have been an F-Type 😄 ). But I'm not good at buying cars and got very lucky with my last one. Thanks.
  15. Ah yes, that answer makes sense. I was wondering too.
  16. Sadly there's a lot of this sort of thing going on, they'll claim it's to help save the planet but in reality it's to help them save a wad of cash. We got lots of naggy emails from our utility company, asking us to "go digital and save the planet", i.e. get them to stop sending paper statements. But they offered no bill reduction. Now think about it, 12 million customers who are sent a bill 4 times a year, at, say, a cost of £1 per letter including the postage, envelope and printed paper. That's a £48 million saving for them every year but more work for you because you now had to log in to their site, and download and print if you want a paper statement. Very clever really, a huge saving for them and no real benefit for us. On a car? Hmm....not sure. Most things you pick up as you're using it, and I suppose the fairly reasonable argument is that you get one built in to the car's system and dowloadable to your computer. If it's done right it should be easily searchable to read on your phone, tablet or computer. Is it something we really use that much? Mine's tucked inside the spare wheel on my 19 y.o. Volvo and to be honest I don't think it's ever been opened.
  17. I also remember reading that you can have an aluminium upgrade for around £120.
  18. Thanks, much appreciated. I've probably got a hundred more questions yet, I do a lot of research when I buy a car as I'm not one for changing them regularly. Seems odd that a car marketed at this level would place folding mirrors as an option. I've never understood that a manufacturer fighting for a piece of a very competitive market would not throw in everything they possibly could, and at least the main things that buyers might expect, and they surely can't cost very much to fit them at the factory, say £50 or so? Even if they add the £50 on to the price. It's important to me as I live on a narrow lane and have no driveway, and the guy opposite has a large van, not leaving much room for traffic to get past and I've had the mirrors hit a few times. For the sake of 300 quid I'd have paid it anyway if buying new (though I'd never buy new, way too much depreciation, taxes and in most people's cases, loan fees so I've never really understood why people do that), but hopefully a lot of buyers will have paid for the option. It would be interesting to know if they can be retro-fitted, if the wiring's there. I know from the reviews some say the same about the folding rear seats, especially if your load space isn't best in class. I know it's not something that would bother most people, but my wife has an electric bike and needs rescuing from time to time due to the occasional punture. I currently have a Volvo S60 and the bike fits (just) with the rear seats folded. These were standard on the model I have - and it's 19 years old! The CD player isn't a deal breaker and I can have one retro fitted I'm sure if necessary. I have Spotify anyway. The ones I saw in a couple of video reviews (but never mentioned in the videos), the slot was on the long black strip between the two temperature displays, above the heating controls.
  19. I'm in the same situation, will be buying used (probably a 2017 or 18 model, petrol, 250HP hopefully) but there are a few things I can't fathom that some models seem to have and some don't, in partcular, folding mirrors and folding rear seats. Also I've seen a few videos, just a few, that have a CD player slot above the heating controls, but none of the models list it in the spec so I'm a little confused - some of us do still use CDs and I have a collections of 1000s.
