  1. Hi Alistair, My s type ticks over at 750 rpm which is the normal rpm. Peter.
  2. Welcome to the Club, David I can see you enjoy your Jaguars, and I hope you enjoy the club as much! Regards, Peter.
  3. HI Kaspa, I think Joe was saying the other week that the price of these great cars was going up due to the rarity value. I would not worry about the ABS fault as it can easily be rectified. If I had the money, and being retired for 17 years I haven't, and if SWMBO would let me, I would buy it. Regards, Peter.
  4. Hi William and welcome to the Club. The x type is a nice car, and it is a fair trip back to North Wales. I used to live in North Wales n the 1960's when there was a steelworks at Shotton! Regards, Peter.
  5. Hi Alistair, and welcome to the club. This happened to me in a Rover Sterling some years ago and I had to increase the revs to hold it still, and use the handbrake. Check that your revs are as normal before going to your dealer. Regards, Peter.
  6. Hi Rod, and welcome to the Club. You can have a read of posts on the S Type Forum which should be of use. I have had a 2007 S type 2.7D. for the last three years. During that time I have driven just over 20,000 miles, and other that the minor issues common to all diesel engines, I have only had one problem that need a replacement part, and that was a new water pump the week before last. The Diesel engine in the 2.7D Jaguar was designed by Ford and Peugeot as a joint venture is a fine solid engine. The minor issues common to all diesels is that the EGR valves can stick occasionally which is an easy cure --- either a good blast on a fast road or a can of Wynn's [or other makes] of EGR cleaner , and the other is the Diesel Particulate Filter which need to be regenerated if you do a lot of small runs. This can be done, again quite easily, by giving it a run at over 40mph once a month for about 20 minutes after operating temperature is reached. The other issue that can occur is the sills underneath the plastic covers can rust, so that is worth checking. The cam belts need changing at 105,000 miles or 10 years, so you will need to check thatchy have been done. My car has only done 68,000 so I hope a member with a similar car but with a higher mileage will share experience with you. Good luck, Regards, Peter.
  7. Tri checking the connections and earthing, John.
  8. Result, Paul!
  9. Hi John, and welcome to the club. Not having a XJ I cannot supply this information, but you can an owners manual either to download or to buy from an address on line. You should also be able to find Fuse Box covers online also. Regards, Peter.
  10. Hi Simon, and welcome to the Club. I am just giving you a bit of a guess, but if your car was a 1970 Ford Escort I would say that the choke wasn't working properly. Probably something to do with the fuel system has something to do with it -- Plugs or injectors. As I say, just a guess, but good luck. Regards, Peter.
  11. There is a question that a logician would like to answer. Possibly a syllogism would supply the answer. Old men drive Jaguars I am an old man Do I drive a Jaguar? OR I drive a Jaguar Old men drive Jaguars I must be an old man Are syllogisms correct? What is the definition of "old".
  12. Drivers in London are completely mad. They do not appear to know how to work indicators, and seem to think that overtaking in a narrow road with parked cars either side is an achievement. And getting to traffic lights in front of you seems to be a necessary achievement. And don't get me on to cyclists! It is no wonder so many are involved in accidents. And there must have been more people injured in Blackwall tunnel than in the mining industry. Mad! And Spaghetti Junction is easy compared with that!
  13. Auto lights should come on and go off within about 10 seconds of entering and leaving a change of light. I find them brilliant, particularly in road tunnels. Blackwell tunnel today was testing! Peter.
  14. Welcome to the Club, Brian. The X type 2.5 is a nice car, and the 2.5 AWD engine is not a thirsty as some say, and does like long steady runs. I had the same model, and also found it very agile, with enough power from the V6. I hope you will find your car enjoyable, and also the club. There are quite a few former Rover/MG owners in the club too - I had a Rover Sterling for 11 years! Regards, Peter.
  15. I thought this would happen, Paul. The £ has fallen against the $ although if should take about three weeks before the effect on oil would start to effect the petrol stations. But some people are always ready to make a fast buck, as they say. My local Shell Petrol Station was selling diesel at 112.9 pence per litre. I will be home from London about 4.00 pm and will see what the price is there. Peter.
  16. Hi Deborah, I don't think a drip will make it fail the MOT if it is hardly noticeable. Sometimes you cannot notice a small drip at all because of the cover under the car engine and you won't be able to see where the drip is from. My car went in for its MOT last week and passed with flying colours, although my mechanic found a water leak which was from the water pump. Replaced! My son has an X Type 2.0 D and the water pump is at the front of the engine, if you care to look when the engine is running. Good luck with the MOT. Regards, Peter.
  17. I drove down to Brockley in SE London today, some steady driving and some stop start in London Traffic. The DPF should be well clean now, and the total 145 miles was done in under 4 hours including a stop, and 45.8 mpg was quite satisfactory. Peter.
  18. Hi Michael and welcome to the club. The number of similar models on the road indicates its rarity, and is certainly approaching the time when "classic" could be added to the description. I would get the slight refurbishing which it possibly needs -- rear bumper included - and it could become quite a valuable car. Regards, Peter.
  19. Welcome to the club, Mark. I have never come across that in my s type 2.7D which has the same engine and it could well be the DPF if the light is showing. But it is not a fast run the you need to regenerate, it is a steady run at a speed about 40 mph. Regards, Peter.
  20. I changed this year from Swiftcover who quoted £640 to Esure who were £100 cheaper. The West Midlands is not a cheap area for insurance. Peter.
  21. Giving the car a bit of a blast can clean out the EGR valves, but as Kevan says a nice steady run at 40 mph is a good test. If I have not been on a long run in a month, I take the A38 to Burton - on - Trent --- about 40 miles round trip on a dual carriageway --- on a Sunday morning when it is quiet does the car a world of good. Peter.
  22. Hi Rodney, If you find a good independent garage you should get a good level of expertise about cars by mechanics who have worked on every model of car. Sharing experiences always helps! Regards Peter.
  23. Hi Wat, If you read the news you will only hear about aeroplane crashes rather than the number of successful flights --- a very small percentage. Many owners come on to this Forum to ask questions and to get assistance with the issues they have. It is the same on all car forums. I have had Jaguars for 5 years, and my S Type has been with me for 3 of them without an issue, there the a new water pump yesterday. I went to Ireland last year - the car was great, although two brake light bulbs failed and local tyre fitting garage supplied and fitted new ones for 5 euros. Regards, Peter.
  24. Hi Peter, and welcome to the club. I have had my S Type for exactly three years, and the only time I have had to put my hand in my pocket, other than tyres, fuel and services, was yesterday when a small coolant leak necessitated a new water pump. £140 is not expensive. My 2.7D is the SE model and is well loaded with optional extras, and the Gemini Engine is not only economical but also rather quick with great acceleration. For a big car the S Type handles very well, and being a rear wheel drive car, the steering is quite light and the car is easy to park I have been driving for over 50 years and this is the best car I have ever driven. Regards Peter.
  25. Hi Gary, My mechanic knows cars -- he works for himself - and he treats your car as it it's his own. What could have been an all day job just to find the leak took him 2 hours. Regards, Peter.
