  1. Hi Michael, Having had company cars for 30 years I can understand your point of cars being for transport, which in part they are. Some cars have always been head turners, though, while fulfilling the basic needs. I am almost as old as the Jaguar marque, and have always admired them, although they always seemed to be out of the range of ordinary horny handed sons of toil such as myself. Nowadays, with the dreaded rusty bits being replaced with either galvanised steel or in some cases fibreglass, plastics, and latterly Aluminium, older Jaguars have become far more easy to obtain. I once had a four year old Austin A40 Farina and had to replace both sills and the rusty bits in the floor. I still have the pop rivet gun I used to attach the new sills and panels which I had made to measure for me from plastic coated steel [stelvetite] as I worked in the Steel Industry. That is why there are now well restored classic cars and, in my opinion, the S Type will follow the Jaguar MkI and MkII into the group of cars which can be described as genuine classics. And there were less than 300,000 made with only about a third of that number sold in the UK, Enjoy your car and driving a Jaguar does make driving a pleasure. Regards, Peter.
  2. Hi Gordon. Don't skimp on oil and filters. I use the oil recommended by Jaguar, Castrol Magnatec in my 2.7 litre D S type. It could be different for an X Type. Regards, Peter.

  7. These lights can dazzle other motorists in good visibility condition. I also keep the auto setting on and as soon as it is dim on come the dipped headlights. In foggy conditions when there is some brightness above the fog, I am inclined to switch off auto and use manual with the rear fog lamp on. Front fog/driving light were discontinued on the S Type in 2007 ---- possibly because they were too bright and some drivers used them in daylight. I also am inclined to agree with Paul. Peter.
  8. That mpg seems a bit high, Stan but on the other hand, if you have not done any long runs it could not be too high. Air filters can be bought of Amazon or Ebay, but Rimmer Bros will supply genuine jaguar filters for around a tenner. They are well recommended too. Regards, Peter.

  10. That is always a possibility with any car, Margaret. Mine had a gap from it's MOT mileage in March 2013 till when I bought it in June 2013. I did have a good look around for chewing damage! You would think that mice knew enough to avoid cats, even sleeping ones! Regards, Peter.

  13. Engine size does not always have a relationship with fuel consumption. I had company cars through the 70's, 80, and 90's, with Ford Escorts 1.3 averaging around 30 mpg, Austin Montegos 1.6 averaging about 35, and a Rover 418 D averaging similar and a Rover 420D averaging just over 40 mpg. Nowadays a modern 5 litre engine pulling an XJ will get almost the same as a Ford Escort of the 70's. Engines have really improved the consumption since the price of oil went up. Peter.
  14. Good morning, Stan. A lot depends on the type on road and the traffic movements. The last tank of diesel I had gave mer just over 42mpg with average style driving, with one 180 mile round trip mostly on the M6 and one 200 miles round trip mostly on the M1, and 40 odd miles local driving. Driving the 190 miles to Weymouth last summer I got 47.1 mpg on a quiet M5 but coming back on the same route I only got 36.7 mpg on a busy M5 with the odd queue and speed restrictions for long periods. And that is with a similar car to yours, slightly younger though. Regards, Peter.
  15. Stan has given you a good solution, Michael. The X type is a completely different car than the s type, so don't bother with the manual for that model. If you are looking for maintenance manuals, you can download them, if you are looking for the original owners manuals you can buy them on eBay. Google the question and see what comes up. I have had a look around and there are some out there. There are separate ones for the Owners Manual, the touch screen and the telephone [if you have one] and the quick start. Regards, Peter.

  18. Welcome to the Club, Michael The S type weighs around 1700 kilos kerb weight and the safe towing weight using the recommended 85% of kerb weight will be circa 1450 kilos. Add 100kg to the weight for the items inside your caravan and you will be well inside the safe figure. I towed a similar weight caravan with a much lighter car [Rover 2.5 litre Sterling auto] and it towed very well without an oil cooler. I think there should not be a problem.   21. Good Morning, and welcome to the Club. There will be someone more expert than myself to tell you how to clean the EGR valve, but I do know that is something than can be done by sone good at car maintenance. I had the same problem twice with my EGR valves sticking on my s type. The first time I took it into a Jaguar Main Dealer and paid £69 to have it diagnosed. The second time I took the car out on a quiet Sunday morning and gave it a bit of faster driving. The next day the Amber light did not come on. The mobile mechanic who has serviced my car came over with his diagnostic equipment, saw that it had been the EGR valve and fixed something. Price £20. Some people do blank off the valve, but I would suggest than a clean would do the the job rather than a replacement - first. Regards, Peter.

  24. That's good, Lee. It happened to me in a Rover Sterling after a very slight kerbside error in a lay-by. A previously smooth ride was suddenly turned into a peculiar one. Two new tyres on the front cured it. When a car has been sitting idle for a time tyres can deteriorate. But now enjoy your car. Peter.
