  1. Hi, Mick. On the topic Terraclean [a separate topic], Jim has used it on several cars and thinks highly of the service. I have been put in touch with a local Mobile Terraclean mechanic, and have asked him about the EGR valve cleaning service. I have also said that I am interested also in a full diesel Terraclean in a couple of months. It seems to do wonders with the emission issues on a diesel. I am waiting for his email, and will let you know that result. I have relooked at the Ed China video, and the product does seem something that is useful. In my first few years of car ownership I used to do my own servicing, on both mine and my wife's various cars with a fair amount of success, but when the Company car came I was required to use a dealer while they were under warranty, and as they were changed annually that was all the time. You get out of the habit and after I retired my wife sold her Red EFI Escort Convertible, so I didn't have a car I understood to play around with. Now with my 80th Birthday coming up, I don't get oily hands or get underneath cars any more. Regards, Peter.
  2. True, Stan. I will have to try it out on another car.
  3. And from a Lancashireman, add Black Pudding.
  4. Hi Mick, I rang an indy garage this morning and got a surprising reply from one of their technicians. He said that Terraclean would do a great job on the engine and would clean the EGR valve, but he also said that a better solution for me would be to find out the cost of either cleaning or replacing the unit. Reassuringly, he did not even suggest that I take the car to his garage to get the job done. I took the car out today for a trip into Shropshire - circa 80 miles - and had no problems. I will need an MOT in June as well as a service and I will ask my mechanic, who I have used for 13 years, to give the EGR valve a clean out. I was also told by the garage I contacted that Terraclean is great for an engine clean up particularly if you have fuel and emission problems. Regards, Peter.
  5. Welcome to the club Jay, I have an s type diesel SE, which must be similar. BUT I do have the owners manual, and I have a little solution, and I have sent you a PM. Regards, Peter.
  6. Welcome to the Club, John. Your post worried me a bit and I hope I don't experience that! My slightly older s type has done 53,230 miles!! The only car I have ever had clutch problems with -- burnt out -- was an Austin A 40 Farina in 1968. There are lots of helpful members who will tell you their experiences, regards, Peter,
  7. Welcome to the Club, Mark. I have never come across that one on a Jaguar. I have spread out a newspaper underneath on a Ford Escort to fine out what and where it was leaking, which indeed allowed me to fin the location. The Jaguar engine is a bit bigger, though. There are a lot of experiences to be found, and experiences teach. I hope you find one. Regards, Peter.
  8. Welcome to the Club, Paul. That is one serious problem your friend has. Firstly, I would not drive the car. Then I would call out the Breakdown service he has, and if it can't be solved at the roadside, get it towed in to a garage. Regards, Peter.
  9. Welcome to the Club, John. I don't get oily hands any more, I'm afraid, but there are a lot of members who know a lot about the beautiful cars we drive, and I am sure there will be lots of good advice. Regards, Peter.
  10. Thanks, Mick. Would Terraclean do the job without taking it out? Peter.
  11. Thanks, Trevor. I was thinking of having it done before the MOT in June as it is supposed to reduce engine emissions. So I have plenty of time to make up my mind.
  12. I am wondering about the value of giving the car a "Terraclean". The engine was replaced at 21,000 miles by Jaguar so has done only 32,000 miles. What do members think?
  13. Yesterday I put in some "top of the range" diesel and then gave the car a good workout on the A38. This morning the amber light did not come on. My mechanic came and his diagnostic scanner said that it had been the EGR valve, which the blast up the A38 had cured. My OBD scanner seems to be a duff one!
  14. Hi Mark, Try 247 Spares. You can type in your reg number and get a quote for a Turbo boost solenoid. Just replacing the part, however, might not be the total answer. There is a site called Just answer that you can get to free if you type in S type diesel Jaguar in limp mode. It gave a question put by an owner of a similar model and year to your car -- it was 2 years ago, though. Worth reading if you are technically savvy, which I am not. Regards, Peter.
  15. If your XK is still under warranty, it might be worth putting the question to the service manager in writing as to whether the gearbox oil should be changed. Whether it would be done under warranty I doubt, but it is worth asking for a written reply in the event of gearbox failure. I do know that a gearbox oil change can be a bit expensive. Peter.
  16. Jaguar say that the gearbox is sealed for life. Some mechanics disagree. I had a Rover Sterling for 11 years. It had an auto box as standard. It also had a wonderful invention called a dipstick. I checked the oil every few weeks and never needed it changed over 120,000 miles. The big question is "Is it working properly?" and the answer should be "If it is not broken, then it doesn't need fixing."
  17. Very sensible, Mick. I no longer cycle because both my knees give me problems -- arthritis -- but I do try to do some walking every week. I put on weight after I retired, but when I found out how much I had put on I started a slow process to lose and keep weight off. I am now very close to the weight I was 20 years ago. Some occupations can lead to an unhealthy life style and sometimes a culture --- a couple of pints after work, for instance --- and it is only when you sometimes have a shock that you change your lifestyle. On topic, my mechanic is coming to look at why the engine amber light is on before we take a short break in Liverpool next week. Regards, Peter.
  18. Welcome to the Club, Phil. Enjoy the discussion as much a you enjoy your car! Regards, Peter.
  19. I nearly got an XJ in 2011 -- just £9500 with a relatively low mileage, around 9 years old. I had been chauffeur driven all its life and maintained regardless of cost. The only reason I didn't get it was that it was a long wheel base, and the insurance on it was quite high as it had belonged to the Queen. I think the depreciation on some of the most expensive cars can be quite severe. I bought a Rover Sterling in 2000 that was 8 months old with every extra that could be fitted. It was the MD's car of a major Rover dealer. New it cost £27,500. I paid £12,500, and when I sold it in 2011 -- eleven and half years later I got £500. Peter.
  20. Welcome to the Club, Brian. The dashboard on the S type did change after the facelift around 2004. There is also the difference in respect of a touch screen system installed. There are those who know more about the XJ than I and will offer their advice. There are discussions about which fuel is best, and the 2.7 diesel in both the S Type and the XJ is a good engine, and the 3.0 litre petrol in the S type is a proven power plant also. If you want speed the 4.2 petrol R version of the S type is very quick. Regards, Peter. [Only 2 miles from the Staffordshire border.]
  21. Welcome to the Club, Liam. You will find a lot of helpful people here who will assist by sharing their experiences. Regards, Peter.
  22. I have done some research in to what happened when England was invaded. The Scots were the ones who could run the longest and fastest. The Welsh were those who could run and climb, and the Irish were those who could swim. The Southerners were those who could surrender, and the Northerners were those who could fight. It is good theory, anyway. I know a great pie shop in Greenwich, two great fish and chip shops, one in Muswell Hill, and the other in North St, near Euston. All three were founded by missionaries from the North.
  23. Congrats to your daughter, Trevor. I only have M.M.S.D.T. after my name! Regards, Peter.
  24. Good idea, Stan. I will try that. Wigan is the World Heritage Site for pies. I am surprised that there isn't an underground pie pipeline [and black pudding] to Kent! Regards, Peter.
