Hi peeps,  What regularity do you check your oil level? As am getting a bit nervous as my car Jag 2L diesel is starting to get a bit loud/tappetty.

This is my first Diesel so not sure if this is the normal sound.

Hi Mark,

My son has an 06 x type 2.0 diesel.  It i not a particularly quiet engine, but ensuring oil levels are OK and premium fuel has kept it a bit quiet.  A can of Diesel Magic or similar helps also.

Cheers will give it a go, have noticed to day that when starting up she a bit loud but after a few mins she calms down, must be the oil getting around the engine?

You can't check the oil level (and condition) too often. It's the same for the engine coolant.

Change both at (or before) the recommended intervals, use the correct grade of each and the engine might last you out.

I only check my STR once a month as it never uses any, but mines a petrol

Yours is a diesel, I'd check it once a week, mainly not for oil going down but going up

if injectors start to get leaky and can cause the oil level to go up

this needs to be kept an eye on, as can cause serious damage to a engine, as it can cause it to engine to "run away"

when I had my oil change on my 2004  2.0d  I placed in ZX1 Extralube Micro Oil Metal Treatment cost around £17 for 250ml off ebay,  plus I use a fuel additive,  Genuine BG44K diesel Fuel System & Injector Cleaner cost £18 for 325ml.....  ive had my jag for nearly 6yrs and runs fantastic, 

 

I check my oil level once a week on my 2.7 Diesel just to make sure it is not too high, rather than too low.

Engine runaway does not happen often, but I don't want it to happen to me!.

Sorry but can someone explain Engine runaway, never heard of this before, thanks in advance....

Engine runaway can happen when diesel gets into the oil: Oil doesn’t ignite, but diesel does, so it can ignite causing the engine to rev out of control, even when you don’t have your foot on the accelerator.

You can try to stall it by braking, but sometimes that is not enough. If you stay in gear the car will then accelerate out of control, so all you can do is knock it into neutral. The engine will then rev itself until the diesel in the oil has all been burned, which can mean revving itself to destruction.

Clearly, accelerating out of control is a life threatening event, so destroying the engine, terrible though that is, is the lesser of the two evils.

David has explained this technical fact simply.

This is a rare thing to happen and I only know of two reported instances, But checking your oil is something that should be done weekly.

I have had a higher level of oil on a couple of occasions, and have removed as much oil as possible and replaced it.  In spite of the fact that we are told that oil will last for up ro 20,000 miles I always have an oil change every year when my car is serviced.
