  1. Hi Ernie, and welcome to the Club! Firstly, I would want it to be in my preferred colours, both inside and out. No point in compromising there, because the colours are not going to change! I would then want it to be absolutely immaculate both inside and out, and you should check all of the electrics that you can, to make sure that everything is working properly. You will obviously be taking it for a test drive: Make sure it pulls cleanly throughout the rev range, that the gear changes are smooth, and that there are no rattles. It should handle with precision, and brake smoothly. You will no doubt check its service history. If possible also find out what kind of journeys it has been used for: The DPF can give rise to problems if it has done mostly short trips.
  2. I was getting various warning messages on my XK, which is not my daily drive. I bought CTEK Battery Conditioner, and plug it in if I am not using the car for a few days. I have never had any warning messages since then!
  3. Morning Neil, and welcome to the club. I had an 09 XF 3.0D S which was superb, though that was of course the previous model and a different engine. Great car though, and I only sold because I tired, and my mileage now doesn’t suit a car with a DPF.
  4. Switching to premium grade, and giving it a long run once a week should help a lot. In addition to premium grade some members use additive once in a while, though this is not something I have done. The hard (and sad) fact is that DPFs are not suitable for repeated short journeys.
  5. Hi Mike, and welcome to the club! I assume that the engine wasn't running when this happened. If so, this is a safety measure to prevent the possibility of the battery being accidentally run down. To inflate tyres you could use the inflater with the engine running.
  6. Hi Allan, and welcome to the club! A lot has been written about the potential DPF problems, which can be truly alarming. I had the XF 3.0D S which I sold a few years ago quite simply because I had retired, and my mileage was now likely to give rise to DPF issues. Having said that, I never had any issues at all whilst I had the car. What kind of journies do you do? Do you use premium grade diesel such as Shell V Power? My wife has a 2.0D Citroen Grand Picasso. The DPF light has never been on, but she did have regular regenerations until she switched to V Power. Since then she has had no regenerations at all. I changed to the XK, so no DPF for me to worry about, thank goodness!
  7. It depends on the buyer: If it is an experienced buyer who can assess what is needed and do it himself, I agree. If however it is not such a buyer, they will want a long MOT, so getting it through the MOT will not bother the experienced buyer but will attract other buyers. So I am with Joe on this: It should sell more quickly with an MOT.

  10. Have a look on Autotrader, and this will give you an idea of what it might be worth if you get it through an MOT, and clear the ABS light.
  11. I have never bothered, but then my XK is not used much in winter months. I have a friend who always puts them on from autumn to spring, and he says that they make a real difference: Especially in snow or ice, but also in the daily lower temperatures. The downside is that he changes his car every couple of years, and the winter tyres never fit the next car: He gets next to nothing for them despite the fact that they are almost unworn.

  14. Hi Matthew, and welcome to the club! That sounds like a lovely S Type, and we would love to see a picture or two. My XK was a similar mileage when I bought it 3 years ago, and has been 100% reliable ever since. I am now touching wood!
  15. I moved from the XF 3.0 S D to my 4.2 XK, and have never regretted it for a moment! My XK is plenty quick enough for me, though it is always nice to have even more torque. I can't comment as to the 8 speed gearbox.
  16. I haven't come across this behaviour, but the climate control is best kept on auto all year round, to keep the system lubricated.
  17. As you say, the navigation cd unit is in the boot. I have only had reason to eject mine once to update the system, and I am sure that was by pressing the eject button on the machine in the boot. If he was messing around in the cockpit, it would be the music cd that he was ejecting.
  18. I bought an update for mine for a similar price. It was a CD, and installed without any problems.
  19. Dad's was very reliable, the only problem I recall being recurring blistering to the paintwork below the headlights. I used to rub it down, prime and respray, but never managed to get the silver blue to match perfectly, and it would start to blister again after a year or so. The woodwork was wonderfully rich, and there was loads of it. I loved the wood, especially the way it extended to things like the door caps. I love the wood on my XK too. To me (and I recognise that it is a matter of personal taste), there is nothing can match good quality wood and leather.
  20. That is indeed a Mk2. My father had an S Type 3.8 back in the 1960s. The back and front ends were totally different from the Mk2. It was a lovely car which he kept for about 5 years, and started my affection for Jaguar. It was opalescent silver blue, had grace and pace, and I wish we had kept it!
  21. We get our premium quality petrol and diesel from Costco. We used to buy Shell V-Power diesel, and have never been aware of any regeneration on my wife's diesel since doing so, and the Costco premium fuels are apparently just as good (but much cheaper!).

My biggest mistake was the Vitesse, which I bought new and sold in six months at a colossal loss. My best (excluding the XK) was the Quattro, which was fabulously smooth, quiet and quick. I did wonder if it had been blueprinted before it was handed over for testing by Motorsport.
  23. That is a lovely car, and I am sure that you are really going to enjoy it! I assume that you have tried your son in the back, and that he fits it OK: There is negligible footroom, and it is very difficult to get in and out. The back seat of mine is never used for that reason.
  24. We already have Formula E: It is quick enough, though they have to pit half way through to change cars because the batteries don't last long enough! Sadly, it is ruined for me by the fact that it sounds just like Scalextric!
