  1. Don't think they did as getting the lid off was a nightmare!! It's due a service soon anyway.
  2. After a struggle to get the airbox lid off this is what I found. Bearing in mind it was "serviced" in December when I bought it!!
  3. I think the older car has an unjustified bad rep, choose carefully and you've got a classy, luxury car. Just make sure all the electrics work, central locking, windows, sunroof if fitted and aircon blows cold and heater blows hot. Look for uneven tyre wear which could point to suspension issues. Good luck with the viewing.
  4. Rust on sills, front wings and bonnet. Make sure everything works as it should, just like any other car really. Don't be too concerned if it's got satnav as its rubbish in the early cars and is non updatable. Make sure gearbox goes up and down smoothly with no "lurch" Let us know what price and spec it's got for more accurate advice. Also, ask yourself this, does it really need to be a 4.0?? The 3.0 is a bit better on fuel and still makes all the right noises!!
  5. Here you go. https://topix.jaguar.jlrext.com/topix/content/document/view?id=63412&groupId=1666
  6. Yes, I've seen the fitting instructions on it. Taped up in the top corner when you take the panel off and there's a cutout in the panel too When I can I'll dig the instructions out.
  7. Had my cambelt done today for a very reasonable £360.
  8. Nope, breakers got it wrong. It just covers underside of the bonnet.
  9. That's the auxiliary belt running alternator, aircon, power steering pump and water pump. The chain is in the engine behind all that. Here it is with the front alloy cover off
  10. I'm sure it's there for noise and heat but don't know how it not being there affects the operation of the car.
  11. Sorry, re read your post!! It's something that you'd be better looking for in a breakers yard. The one on my bonnet is a bit floppy down the sides but strong double sided tape sorted that out. It'd be interesting to see what a dealer would want for it.
  12. Shave you not got the black mat under the bonnet??
  13. I used to get around 25mpg when I had my 3.0 but that was because the novelty of a big V6 auto hadn't worn off!!
  14. No worries there then. To chance the plugs on the left bank requires the inlet manifold to be removed. Pig of a job that even main dealers fail to change them. I nearly bought a car that was running rough a couple of years ago and the seller had plugs and coils changed on the right bank but still ran rough, spent too much at a dealer then decided to punt on. Missed a bargain there!! Where abouts in Yorkshire you from?? I'm a Yorkshireman in exile in North Wales !!
  15. Chris, all petrol models, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 4.2 all have chains, only 2.7d has a belt which needs changing every 10 yrs or 105k. Enjoy your car with the knowledge that you don't have to mess with it. Suppose the benefits of chain is offset by the myther of changing the plugs in the left bank!!
  16. I know, Llandudno jag place wanted £500 when rybrook had an offer of £505 inc vat!! I can understand a dealer having high labour charges because of overheads but still puzzling.
  17. The only problem associated with the chain is on high mileage cars, say 150k+ the tensioners start sticking and rattling. I had it on my 3.0 petrol with 147k on it, on start up they rattled for a few minutes till the oil got warm. Flush and good quality oil sorts it, other than that happy motoring!!
  18. Chester jag centre in Ellesmere Port have the job, £360 all inc. Rybrook wanted £600 all inc.
  19. Who recommend change, as Phil says, best thing about chains. I'm having my wallet emptied on Thursday for a cambelt change
  20. Yes, yours is a mk1. Cars with the growler in the grille are mk2/facelift cars. Look up inside the bonnet and you will see the hole with the badge poking through.
  21. On the mk1 S type the hole is under the badge so it's as simple as carefully removing the badge then fitting the leaper through the bonnet. Later cars the hole isn't there but on the inside of the bonnet there's a cutout with the hole position stamped out. All a did was drill a pilot hole in the centre of it then from the outside used a step drill to open it up to accept the leaper base. Certainly scary times drilling into the bonnet but imho worth it.
