  1. Hi Peter, 2.5v6, 3.0v6 are ford engines, 2.7diesel are generic(jaguar, landrover, citroen, renault), V8's are jaguar. early v8's were 4.0 and some had issues with nicacil bores and timing chains I have a S-type R and they are just great, the jaguar V8 is absolutely superb, silky smooth, massive torque and superb performance 400bhp in standard trim. service history is essential on the type R, 4.2 supercharged engine is very very strong and reliable, there is a valley water pipe, that can fail, hose is less that £20, but labour will cost quite a bit, as it sits deep in the vee below the supercharger, so check this has been done, budget £500 to £1000 to get this hose replace at a garage. The 4.2's only come in 6 speed auto and are very strong, jaguar claim sealed for life but if its done over 50k then its due, £200 for the parts to service yourself, £300 to £400 at a garage. check sills under the covers, but generally after 2004, there sound, mines 2004 and it was the first thing i checked and they look new. only other things are bushes all round, there's lots of them on the S-type, gives it its silky smooth drive, if the car been driven hard, the bushes fail, so listen for knocking noises and any clunking. generally look for history, basic stuff like tyres, if its got cheapo's/budget tyres, then this tells you how its been looked after, budget tyres on the S-type R are leathal, 400bhp, budget tyres and rear wheel drive don't mix. if you find a good S-type R, with low millage and history, then you will never lose any money on it, mines gone up in value, just in the 12 months i've owned it. mpg, if your worried about mpg's, this might be the wrong car for you, but driven nice, ive seen 33.4 mpg on the trip computer at a steady 70, flat road, urban mpg's anywhere from 12 to 20 mpg, depends on what you do with the right foot. personally I prefer pre 2005 shape, pre-face lift, these had more accesories, build quality seemed better and had better spec, later S-type R, went to poorer brakes, smaller discs, less accessories and grey birds eye maple was replace with aluminium and a carbon effect, which were not as nice and very plastic feel to them, also pre mid 2006 are £290 road tax and after mid 2006 were £505 road tax. cheers Joe
  2. hi had a quick search and this under " Le Jeune Jaguar mascot "
  3. hi looks nice, looks like a radiator cap I'd put it on ebay if your thinking of selling it, as it gets the best audiance just put a reserve on it that your happy with and see what it goes for, you can allways cancel the auction if your not happy with how its going cheers Joe
  4. hi the battery feed goes straight to the starter motor the starter will be of a pre engaged type in other words the relay/solenoid is actually on the starter motor itself, big lump on the side of it what it does is the solenoid has two purposes one to engage the starter to the flywheel and then once engaged it makes a very heavy duty contact and power up the starter so if your hearing the click that means the starter is trying to engage. what you could try is check you have battery voltage at the starter, you need to check you have voltage while you are trying to start it, if you have then you could have a bad earth on the engine, no earth and the starter has no return path. if its a bad earth, easiest way to proove it would be to get a jump leads, use the black at one end and go to a good earth, like a bracket bolted to the body in the engine bay and the other end of the black jump lead, clamp it to something on the engine, like a engine mount or bracket, so your making a earth path from the body to the engine if it starts then you know its a bad earth its a common problem on modern cars, on olden days cars i had this happen on a car and when i tried to start the car it used the throttle cable as a earth and melted it cheers joe
  5. hi I've had my s-type for over 12 months and never had any issues you see the few problems that people have on here, are on older cars, not the newer models and when you think how many jaguars there are out there and how many people on here that actually have problems, its only a very small percentage the problems with forums sometimes is that 90% of people on here, only come on here because they have a problem with there car, the other 10% come on here because they enjoy there jaguar and like to share there knowledge to help others, I think my s-type is great, the STR is a beast and for all you diesel boys out there, You dont know what your missing!!!! LOL Would'nt swap mine for anything cheers Joe
  6. saw this and thought it was quite funny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1BiFTk5Acw&feature=youtu.be
  7. hi Ive seen this before when there been a bad connection on the battery terminals, or even where the negative bolts to the body if it does it again its worth removing them and make sure there clean and tight cheers Joe
  8. hi the abs sensor, would of caused the the abs and dsc faults, which caused the limp mode the drive shaft must of been worn, or damaged and replaced at the same time cheers Joe
  9. hi the autoboxes are quite good, if looked after I do recommend the oil change, filter, pins and mechatronics sleeve. its quite easy to do. this ZF gearbox 6HP26, 6speed, is used by ford, Jaguar, landrover, BMW, Audi and many more, so its a known and proven gearbox I have one on my S-type STR, with over 400 bhp, handles the power effortless and its lovely and smooth, I've changed my oils right through, I change my oil and filter every year and plan on changing diff and gearbox every 5 years.( and my car only does 2k a year ) The problem is some s-type were £60k when new and some basic ones can now be bought £££, like less than a £1000, people buy these cars because there a bargain, but when it comes to maintaining them, they skimp on everything, services, cheap oils, cheap tyres, you only get what you pay for so if you bought a slightly over priced one, with full service history, or even full jaguar history, with a pile of receits and loads of documentation, then you can be sure its going to give you years of trouble free motoring, if you keep the maintenance up of course. but people expect to pay £1000 for one and expect it to be trouble free, with no history what so ever, sometimes get a shock when something fail and wonder why?? a well maintained car will rarely give trouble or fail, a poorly maintained car, will allways give trouble well thats what's i think any way, I've had my s-type now just over a year, its allways been maintained regardless off cost and I have never had any issues with it what so ever, might be just luck, or just good maintenance, who knows. cheers joe
  10. hi no need it just lets you know what the last alarm was cheers joe
  11. hi if you arm the alarm by only pressing the lock button once, the volumetric sensors are disabled, for when you leave a pet in you car say
  12. hi thats the interior sensors, not sure where it is on the xf usually by the interior light or top of pillars each side of windscreen these usually only go off when you leave a window open or sunroof try dusting them off, just in case it dust cheers joe
  13. hi very nice, post some pics up I'd have good look through your handbook, there that many new functions on these modern jaguars, sometime there features you have you don't know about. cheers Joe handbook here if you dont have one XF_Owners_Handbook_10MY_tcm91-47656.pdf
  14. hi dont think the keyfob can do that usually when there is feedback from a keyfob the it would indicate on your dash with a message saying keyfob battery is low usually the main things are a dodgy door that does not lock, interior ultrasonic sensors, a window is open, boot is open or bonnet is open if you look in your handbook, it should tell you what to look for, ie on my car s-type, if you leave something open the indicators flash a certain number of times to let you know, also when the alarm sound and you disarm it the indicators flash again certain amount of times to let you know your alarm was triggered cheers joe
  15. hi pezzer have you looked under your car to see what been replaced, ie which half shaft (drive shaft) I dont see how a half shaft can throw up a transmission fault, the 2 half shafts connect the hub to the diff in the middle, there are no sensors on the propshaft, no sensors on either half shaft(drive shaft), no sensors on the diff, the only sensors are on the hubs abs sensors, to throw a fault up on abs or dsc, one sensor has to stop working or you get speed difference any sensor and the abs operate or the dsc operates so for this to come on either the diff would have to fail or the half shaft(drive shaft) would have to snap, which would mean you would lose all drive, due to these cars having a diff even if one of the cv joints had failed you still dont usually get any faults, just becomes very noisey just wondered if you had looked what had been replaced cheers Joe
  16. hi check the bonnet switch also, make sure the bonnet is pressing down on it cheers
  17. Hi All stop start systems monitor battery voltage and if your battery is getting old and not holding charge correctly, then the stop/start system will not work as often its a good sign of battery condition, the more often the stop/start works, the better the battery condition new battery should cure it, unless there's some kind of callibration jaguar do with the software plugged in, it all depends how much you like the stop/start, personally I dont like it, as it can cause more harm than good, there only put on now days to make claim to better mpg's and they bring the road tax band down aswell, but every time the engine stops, so does the charging system, so extra load on the battery and electrics, also when engine stops, so does the water pump, so the engine it self becomes hotter, especially around the cylinders and cylinder head, your air con stops and then when you engine starts, theres the extra load of everything having to catchup, battery has to charge up, load on aternator, air con and cooling sytem, it just put extra load on all the engine components they say that the most wear happens when an engine starts up, there might be a difference starting once or twice and compared to twenty plus times anyway I think a new battery should fix it cheers Joe
  18. hi looking on ebay cats for your car look at about £80 each dont know if you will get away with changing 1 or the pair if your in good knick and your thinking of keeping it £160 for a pair of cats is not badly priced compared to a genuine set cheers Joe
  19. hi I'd try ebay, you can your parts number from here http://www.sngbarratt.com/CatalogueSections.aspx?m=49 also could be lambda sensors, a failed lambda will cause high emissions what did it fail on CO, CO2, HC or O2 cheers Joe
  20. Hi You can turn the alarm off by opening the door and switching the ignition on cheers joe
  21. hi do you know what fault codes were reset, might point you in the right direction also if the xj is anything like a s-type, if the battery gets low, it can throw up many faults and codes they might of charged the battery, cleared the fault codes and hey presto its ok ( till 3 weeks later ) I'd be tempted check the battery, it should be over 14 volts when running and never below 12 volts when not running. battery is a common problem on s-types, if you have over 14 volts when running, could be just battery. cheers Joe
  22. Hi yes no problem, just remove the plastic cover and there a hole at the end, you could just push it in and have a good look also the end is only 5.5mm, so would fit in the holes along the sill aswell cheers Joe
  23. hi I bought one of these a few week ago, to check the condition of the valley pipe on my STR brilliant, under a tenner, 5m long, just 5.5mm round, take pictures, video, has led light on the end and its even water proof comes with hooks for the end, magnet and a 90 deg mirror just plug into your phone, picture quality is brill, plug and play cheers Joe
  24. hi try british car parts, ive had a few bits off them and you get a good service and good parts https://www.britishparts.co.uk/ cheers joe
