Reverse camera

Hello all, I have a 2005 s type petrol 3.0 v6 auto it is a Japanese import.  I purchased a remote back up camera and monitor, and fitted it (only a 20 minute job not). I cannot work out what is going on,I have put the ground on a designated earth, I found the reverse wire it is number 4 on the block of seven wires it is black and red or orange wire  I have 12 volts on it with out going in to reverse, when reverse is selected it goes to 0 volts and the reversing lights come on as they should but loose all power to the camara. I have checked all diagrams and they all show number 4 as the reverse wire. Hope some nice person knows the answer.

Hi Mike, all I know is that on the s type is that there is 12 volts at all times even when the ignition is off. When running if the brakes are operated the volts go to ground as with all the lights when used accordingly, that then turns the camera off as it looses its 12 volts feed when reverse is selected. My problem is where do I put the camera wire to and Do I need to fit a relay to over come this. Thanks Steve.

Hi Steve, and welcome to the club.

I also have an S type [2.7 diesel 2007.

I do not have a camera so no answer.

The S type does use that battery well as required but if I don't do a reasonable time on the road I have to give the battery a charge.  Over the last 9 years I have not had electronic problems but I have had three batteries.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter, yes they do use batteries I have read a  lot of people who have had problems with the batteries, even to the point of running fine they turn it off for 10 minutes and the battery is dead when they go to start it again. Mine had a new battery on last year when I bought it I do use it every day and when I start up I listen for any drop in power and drag  it does fire up very quick though. Regards Steve.

A lot of battery problems associated with Jaguar and particularly S-Types can be overcome with the use of a CTEK MS 7 or 10 charger / re-conditioner.

Used at least once a month (or more if possible) for at least 24 hours they drastically reduce low battery problems (Parasitic Drain)

Many members on this forum use them and swear by them. I use one with my S-Type and have as good as  done away with regular unwanted/unneeded warnings/codes etc etc.   They are well worth the investment, even if you have a new battery, as it keeps it on top form.

Best Wishes and Regards, John

I would in effect connect the camera etc across the reversing lights respecting required polarity.

If wire 4 goes to 0V when reverse is selected then the camera should be connected to the positive (+12V) rail and wire 4. I don't have the cct diagram so I don't know how wire 4 is taken to 0V (Chassis), I presume there is a relay that performs ths task. Connecting the camera across the reversing lights would be easy. As for the monitor is it also for a forward cam, does it switch on immeditely, if not it would need to be constantly powered when the ignition is on.

The car's equipment has power (+12V) attached to one side and the equipment / function is activated when the other side is taken directly or indirectly (Relay) to 0V ie. chassis potential.

Hope this is a bit clearer.

Cheers

Mike

BTW. get yourself a testmeter or a 12V Bulb with a couple of wires soldered to it, fit a crock clip to the wire attached to the brass base of the Bulb. Fit a clip of some sort to the other wire.  Clipping the crock clip to a chassis point, the Bulb can be used to indicate the presence or not of 12V at any  point being investigated. Incidentally Wrap the base of the bulb in insulating tape to avoid accidental short circuits.

hi

its because the rear lights use a constant 12v on one side of the Bulb, then the other side of the Bulb goes to the rear body module and switches the earth.

the wire your connection to is a earth so it wont work, you have to use a relay to convert the switch earth to a switched positive, look at pic below

any relay will do

cheers

Joe

I cheated and bought this for my XF, more because my daughter wasn't happy reversing:

AUTO-VOX W7PRO Digital Wireless Reversing Camera Support 2 Cameras Front and Rear or Side Reverse Camera HD Image with Night Vision Stable Signal Rear View Camera IP68 Waterproof Backup Camera: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

It was relatively easy to install, just a matter of connecting the camera to the reverse light feed to trigger it, although getting the cable through the boot lid to the side panel was a bit fiddly. The display screen just plugs into the cig lighter socket and communicates with the camera wirelessly.

To be honest I still found it hard to get used to, to judge how close I was on the couple of occasions that I've tried it,  and I still find it easier just to use the parking sensors, which tell me when I'm within a couple of inches of whatever is behind me, so I haven't really used it since.

Should be interesting to see how my daughter finds it as she's not driven it since I fitted it.
